BTW, they are quoting 9-12 months delivery on Everests and 14 months on (the killer V6 petrol) Ranger Raptor.

Whatever you do, try to test drive literally everything on the market first. We did that some years ago, driving things that we knew we'd hate, and things we thought we'd love, and the outcome was not what we expected.

BMW seem to have reached a level of peak ugly.... I don't blame anyone for jumping ship.

More seriously, and if it's in the price range... give the Mercedes GLC 300e (plug-in hybrid) a spin while you're out kicking tyres. I've heard and read good things. Review of MY20 model here

There's also the Jaguar F-Pace Hybrid. Friends have just picked up one, and have been very happy with it - along with the XF for 'him' (sadly not the 4.2l supercharged V8). There's also the smaller cousin, the E-Pace.

But as jb said, take anything you can lay your hands on for a test drive.

Both rather deeply related to the Audi Q8, which would be a bargain in comparison.

Jaguar is one of the brands that people will overlook. They either don't think of it, or someone will jump in and tell you how unreliable they are (based on what he's read on the net). They have the i-Pace, which is a very interesting electric vehicle, with great packaging. Rare as hens teeth, and probably not the most up to date battery system. But, their other 'hybrids' are very limited, simply using the hybrid component as part of their start/stop system (the Landrover side of the company has some real hybrids, which I presume will migrate to Jag at some point). The E-Pace is a smallish SUV, which I thought was overpriced for what it offered, especially in comparison to the larger F-Pace. An F-Pace SVR would be nice. Totally silly, but nice.

I refrained from offering any suggestions, simply because test driving everything is part of the fun, and most suggestions (pro or con) are based on thin air anyway. Personally I own a Range Rover Sport, and a Jaguar XE.

I bought our first Merc 47 years ago, I am on our 3rd now, have had lots of others in between, but now we have downsized to one car and it's a Mercedes SUV. Love it.
Whatever you buy make sure you get in writing that the dealer will give you a loaner car while yours is being serviced

I’ve heard bad things about Merc after sales service especially when it comes to “warranty” matters. No one is perfect obviously but would appreciate comments.

Re Hyundai IONIQ5. A bit too small for me. I think A Tesla Y has more boot volume

I've done 1200 clicks in the first week. A mix of city, country sealed and some dirt. Feels good with the longer wheelbase and wider track. Cooper AT3s are very quiet.

I particularly like the dynamic cruise control. It is especially good in country areas with frequent speed limit changes.

VW Touareg R is out mid-late next year but they’ve just started taking orders.

Hybrid, 340kw, specced with everything.

It’s basically a totally loaded Cayenne Hybrid (at a base Cayenne price point).
