Hi all,

has anyone submitted a claim for their travel insurance related to a COVID-19 infection and what documentation did you submit?

Here in WA you are required to self report a positive RAT test and you receive various text messages to confirm, however not sure if this is sufficient for an insurance claim? I called both the insurer (AMEX/Chubb) and my GP and neither was very confident in their response.

Any thoughts?

Do you have time to get a PCR whilst positive? I think that would be needed.

I claimed against additional hotel cost + cost of flight change earlier this year when I got Covid in the US.

Insurance through AHM but delivered by a third party they contract (Travel Insurance Partners)

Because the costs were over $1000 (6 nights in a suite), I had to submit a medical form (pages 9 and 10 here: https://static.ahm.com.au/files/forms/ahm-travel-insurance-claim-form.pdf) I went to my GP and showed them the PCR test result, they signed it and I sent it though.

No questions from the insurer but it took over a month to pay out. One plus was I did two claims (one for hotel and one for flights), and only payed the $250 excess once.

I think this is one that should be clarified with the insurers in more detail if and when the situation arises.

If you get covid and have to postpone or change your travel plans I’d call the insurance company first off to see a) what cover will be proved and b) what evidence they need.

I suspect a RAT would be too easy to falsify, especially if self reported. You could have decided to change plans for any number of reasons and simply reported a positive RAT.

It's always best to cantact the insurance company at the first sign of an issue; in fact, it's madatory on many policies.
