What happens if you catch COVID whilst overseas?

Is this stupid 'takes 7 days' doctor review nonsense still required for travel from NZ if i come back via there?

It's a Qantas policy. Nothing to do with Australia.
If you have medical conditions (not just COVOD related) I believe this 7 days has been their policy for years.

So if you know you'll test positive for the Australian and Qantas "72hrs prior to departure COVID PCR test" requirement and are flying Qantas, you need the doctors cert 7 days prior to flying to be approved.

You also need that doctors cert to enter Australia for customs, but from what I've read you just present this at customs and don't need to submit anything prior.

yea I will be able to get the Drs cert without issue, the problem is adding a whole week before getting home just for the qantas policy which they have decided to impose on top of a nations restrictions, which i find absolutely ludicrous

The irony that its easier to get into Australia than it is to get onboard a Qantas flight.

Spirit of the nation
It's certainly not something I'd thought about when booking flights for May. Staying away from Qantas now. I am really sorry for your troubles but I suspect you've helped many others so Thankyou.

So it's much safer if traveling Internationally to book non-Qantas in scenario you catch the covid.

Will keep this in mind.

Love some thoughts:
Get Dr cert in say 10 days.

option 1
10 days to uk - > singapore via EK on rewards
buy separate EK ticket from sinagpore to Aus for cash (ie. economy, kill me)

option 2
10 days to cert, 7 days for qantas to say what they think of the world
uk - > NZ via EK on rewards
NZ - > syd via QF on rewards

is there a good option 3 i'm not seeing
i'd rather not do economy with the amount i've spent on this trip but cant see anything into AUS other than some leg involving QF in the next 2 weeks.

How will you get into NZ ?
I don’t think they are allowing International transits on inbound.

seems like whenever you end up on the west coast of USA you end up with a QF flight looking back at you to get to AUS

Would a cast iron excuse for an extra 7 days away be so bad? I can think of many occasions I would have loved to be able to tell people 'sorry not sorry, I'm stuck overseas for another week' 😂. I understand that YMMV.

my wife who didnt come with me for christmas is ... less than impressed lol

going to be over 100k cases today from the look of things and i have these stupid hoop after hoop to jump through to prove i'm through, god this is annoying.

Relatives of mine who live in USA all went to U.K. for Christmas and have all one by one tested positive on different dates (although 3 of the adult children made it back to USA before testing positive there). So they are in the process of having to untangle linked flight bookings and fly back to USA one by one when cleared. Luckily they are staying in a private home in UK not a hotel. Luckily also not flying QF, not that QF flies that route anyway.

And Australia according to WHO figures on Wednesday had the second highest daily cases per millin in the world. If we do get to 100000 cases today we will breeze past the UK. What exactly are we protecting?

Countries (other than HK) will soon be banning us! and look at India now. Reliable stats?

Just curious: does this QF policy (needing extra time to 'recover' from covid) also apply to QF domestic? Some interstate positives also causing extra 'holidays'.

No, tests are no longer required to cross (most) state borders anyway.

The posted graph is quite meaningless in that these are daily tested positives.
Most of the rest of the world lacks the resources or the inclination to chase such rainbows during a deluge
