What happens if you catch COVID whilst overseas?

I’ve resurrected a long dormant NHS number and am waiting to hear whether the local GP practice will accept me. There is the option to register as a temporary patient for a stay of under 3 months i.e. you don’t have to be a resident and show proof of local address.
I also resurrected my NHS number from 1992 which was when I last lived here. Was very difficult as my surname has changed 😆
Hope you manage to get registered.

I agree entirely it can be an uphill struggle registering with a GP in the UK - whether you're a local or a visitor. However, despite availability of reciprocal healthcare for Australians I think being registered is worthwhile if you’re staying for several weeks or months rather than days. I am in the process of doing so, in large part as a contingency plan for testing positive pre-return to Australia and needing a recovery certificate and/or other support from a GP.

Slightly OT but any idea how you find your long dormant NHS number. I must have had one because I visited doctors and had xrays when working there in the 80s

I'm confused with the 14 day requirement ... Victoria allows u out of isolation just 7 days after a positive PCR! So why the need by airlines or anyone else to go above and beyond that?

It's currently the federal government policy.

It needs to be changed as it is out of step with national standards now.

Is it best for us to all email our local members to take this up with the department to have it looked in to?

I rang the last GP and asked them, alternatively this might help ?

For the postcode use someone you know or use this one .. SW1A 2AA.…and say you live at number 10 ! ( it’s Downing St ! )

Thanks - it didn't come up. I did work for some quite wealthy people when I was there and he paid all of medical expenses. I may have flown under the radar. I might check my xrays and see if that has anything on it

I understand the postcode you submit through that link needs to match the address in your NHS record. I got a match but it offered only the option to send me the NHS number by post to that old address. It’s a Catch 22 where you need to know your NHS number to be able to change/add other contact details such as phone and email in your NHS record. Success came when I downloaded the NHS app, passed the ID verification check and my NHS number then appeared in the app. Having the number eased the path in registering with a new GP practice but isn’t a prerequisite.

Getting further OT for this thread, I know….

My issue exactly, going to France in mid March, plan on getting exit PCR day prior to leaving back for Australia. 14 days should reduce to 7 of course. Then of course ability to find a doctor in France who is prepared to sign the form.

A cautionary tale about testing positive while in Italy

Indeed but also a cautionary tale of treating a runny nose and a cough as COVID really. And doing a self-test then informing the hotel.

I guess they've done the right thing, but look at the consequences of doing so..?

I agree, I was also wondering why they told the hotel instead of just isolating in their room.

OK last OT - I did put in the old postcode and still no luck - might try the app - thanks for the info

Someone posted in another thread about fit to fly recovery certificates online from Drs in the uk. If you google it loads come up. Might save a lot of hassle.

Why in the hell do Qantas need an additional 7 days?

Just got my positive and looking to get dates changed to after I will be able to get Dr's letter. Qantas really want to add another week? EK say you need to be able to qualify by the rules of the country you are going to.

as if its the nations job to manage medical allowances not a damn airlines.

So guess i'll get dumped out at SIN and rather than get the QF flight just pay and get the EK. total idiocy.

Can you do that in Singapore? I'd check their requirements also. Qatar is an option.

From what I saw Singapore just want negative lat flow for transit.

60,000+ a day now in Aus, yea lets have 34234 rings to make people jump through to keep out 3 or 4 cases, absolutely stupid.
Can you assume you will get a negative one though? I'd be getting the Dr letter after 14 days and not risk Singapore.
