2022 travel plans

OK, here I go; let's just see how much of this comes to pass. šŸ¤”

First up - I've given up on any overseas travel in 2022 (and probably 2023).

I've rolled over a bunch of 2020 and 2021 deposits and cancellations, plus tossed in a few more new things. I always scope two years+ ahead, start hard planning 18 months ahead and start locking in just under 12 months ahead when airlines open inventory.

But I can't see much stability that favours that approach returning before 2024.

PJM still works as a hands-on educational consultant in a special needs area, so she does at least have school holidays off that I can work with. And she has some LSL she can draw on that gives added flexibility.

1. The nearest I'll get to overseas for a while: off to Rottnest Island with PJM 12-13 January to burn a few Li ions in our E-bikes.

2. Brushing Broome/dodging monsoonal lightning with PJM, bro and SIL for five days 17-21 January.

3. May: using up some Intrepid & Peregrine deposits for Europe trips from 2020: Qld coast and E Arnhem Land, and following immediately on The Ghan DRW-ADL. Plan is to drive to Qld, leave my vehicle with friends, do the tours N, continue on to DRW, do The Ghan, then fly ADL-BNE to reconnect with what's left of my wheels and drive home. Solo while PJM toils.

4. September: A full two-week Arnhem Land Nhulunby-DRW trip. Solo.

5. September-October: Canberra for about a week with PJM to stay with friends.

6. October: finally (hopefully) SYD-PER on the Indian Pacific. Solo. Third time fare rollover lucky?

7. November: Voyage for one week CNS-CNS to the N outer GBR. Sshhh- surprise for PJM for a milestone birthday in 2022.

Now, what could possibly go wrong given the lunatics in charge of the numerous asylums in our great unified nation... šŸ§:confused:o_OšŸ˜œ

Currently travelling through Europeā€¦.AMA!
Is this for leisure? Broadly speaking, do you feel like the effort of being in Europe and navigating the various restrictions to be onerous to the point of making the trip somehow unenjoyable?

It depends on the country and restrictions. Malta was difficult as you had to also wear masks outdoors.

Yes for leisure and visiting family/friends.

I would say some aspects are frustrating but the experiences make up for it eg the sun coming out just as I arrived at Stonehenge (first visit!).

Zero fuss arriving into LHR at 4:30am not a soul around to check anything. A little more fuss leaving London on the Eurostar with French border agents at least asking to see some paperwork but then waiving me through upon telling them I was going to Brussels and a "Welcome to Europe" :)

Obv if I test positive along the way I might be a little less positive but so far apart from wearing my N95 mask much more than I would in Sydney things have been very good!

Think of this as a time capsule to be reviewed on 29/12/22!!!

Have a Europe trip booked for June (points thankfully) but not feeling very hopeful about it now. While technically it should be possible, the level of restrictions and hassle of covid testing etc might be too much....will see nearer the time.

Our UK visit in March now has an Ireland leg in early April (LHR-DUB-LHR).
If it's booked with BA, I'd suggest checking prices. A very good sale started in the last few days and DUB is very keenly priced in ET and CE. You can cancel your current booking (if revenue) and receive an eVoucher straight away that you can then apply to the new booking.

Son-in-law tapped into the current sale from his WFH office in Sydenham (SE26). Haven't seen the final damage but sounds not too bad.

Out of curiosity, is domestic connection QF or VA?
QF. I though Qatar switched from domestic transit QF to VA early 2019, but def QF now. ASP-SYD-DOH-LHR, then LGW-DOH-ADE-ASP. $75 cheaper for same flight out of LGW compared to LHR. I am a cheapskate though. Might be hobnobbing with the upper crust at Goodwood though.

So we are only a couple of weeks into 2022 and we have decided to postpone the UK/ EU trip until 2023. So now booked to CA and the US not sure if it will be any easier but at least there is a plan.

Locked in SYD-SIN-MUC (5 weeks in Germany/Austria/Switzerland) then ZRH-YVR (4 weeks in British Columbia) then YVR-SYD

We're determined to make this happen - flights booked - now onto accomodation.

Sounds good! We have a family (re-booked of course!) trip planned for mid year a bit in reverse of you - a couple of weeks in YVR visiting friends, then a few weeks in MUC visiting family and departing from GVA. Will see how we go! What time of year are you heading off?
