THE side of the approach road to Melbourne Airport has been landscaped and fenced off with a rope festooned with little yellow flags to prevent people parking. It is unlikely this is solely about beauty or road safety. It also happens to protect one of the airport's most reliable revenue streams.

In the past financial year Melbourne Airport earned 21 per cent of its income or about $90 million from its car parks, almost double the revenue percentage of any other airport in Australia. Sydney by comparison earns 7 per cent.

There are a few options to park/wait close to the airport and avoid parking fees.

The aircraft viewing area on operations road is not a bad spot, better views than the Gladstone Park Pub.....
I noticed a sign for the public viewing area off Sunbury Road or Perimeter Road and saw a few cars parked there. Is this the same place?

Nah, Marcis10 is talking about either the end of the runway where a recent EK flight would have scraped the roof of your car, or further around past the golf course so you get a side on view of the main (16?) runway...

Where you are talking JK gets a bit exciting on a good windy day, especially the 738's seem to sway quite a bit as they cross over you at 100M or so...

Mr!

Talking about ridiculous parking fees. In HBA we have a "valet" service which used to cost about $60 for a week of undercover parking - as if mid March that price increased to $90 for outdoor... It aint the $30 - its the percentage that concerns me. Its ridiculous, and of course there si no comeback because no-one is "responsible", just a whole lot of handballing until you give up!
