12 inmates at Parklea contract Covid

There have been 12 cases of Covid at a major jail in NSW.

A Corrective Services spokeswoman said the virus had now impacted the correctional system.

"Twelve inmates from Parklea Correctional Centre, who are housed in the same wing and were not new arrivals, tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday and yesterday (Saturday, 28 August 2021). An investigation into the source of the infection is underway," she said.

"Twenty-three prisons across NSW are taking extra precautions after inmates, who may have been exposed to the virus, were recently transferred to those prisons from Parklea Correctional Centre."

Covid outbreak in jail

More than 30 inmates at a NSW prison have tested positive for Covid-19, with concerns the virus could spread throughout the facility.

Jeremy McAnulty, from NSW Health, confirmed on Sunday that there were 31 cases at Parklea Correctional Centre.

“The present health authorities, which is through Saint Vincent’s Hospital, provide support for the correctional facility,” he said.

“They are working very hard to make sure that the other inmates and staff are protected.”

Dr McAnulty said the initial investigation suggested the virus was introduced by someone from the community.

“The investigation is ongoing to both understand how transmissions occurred … but also to make sure that the isolation, testing and vaccinations are in place to minimise further spread,” he said.

Asked about reports of 16 people at Silverwater Correctional Complex also contracting the virus, Dr McAnulty said he did not have the exact numbers.

It does.

Those currently isolating at home would have a known variant if they end up positive.

Those coming in from overseas may have a new variant.

We've seen many times people with negative tests 1-3 days prior to departure have tested positive on day one in Australia. Some have tested positive on day 13.

So until we get a good method of enforcing home Q - for example along the lines of Port Power - there are reasons to still
Garbage, doing anything like this for years will absolutely destroy our tourism industry. They just felt they had a win with Scomo's 70/80 plan, and be somewhat open for business (hopefully early) next year.

At worst test before takeoff, test on landing, maybe new business set up for overnight quarantine awaiting overnight COVID test result. Any more than 2 nights quarantine would push away most international tourists.

I'm not sure how many international tourists would be interested in coming at the risk of being blocked by a recalcitrant State border here or there. May be alright if the tourist was visiting NSW, ACT or Vic but outside that an international tourist would need to be super-wary.

Wonder how the Australian government seeks to quickly resolve vaccination status of internationally vaccinated people (both citizens and not).

Really interesting Insiders episode today on the continued spread of the virus across Australia (on now) it was interesting the comment about WA - and the hint that the media (cough Kerry) has changed their (cough his) mind about the border closures and will start swinging towards borders open for Christmas (fully vaccinated only I’m sure)….

Previously the media has been supportive…

Will be interesting to see how this changes…
Yes I saw that too, and loved the way the ABC Perth guy mentioned Stokes as "owning opinion influencing assets" in WA. I hope he uses his assets.

This is where IATA and ICAO come in, they should be able to integrate with source country vaccination registers. There’d be people in Montreal working on this right now. Then you get DOCS OK on your boarding pass.

Alternatively they could have a registration process as part of the ETA for international arrivals but that doesn’t work for Australians and would require us to accept a wide variety of source documentation.

He absolutely will. Because a lot of his bills are paid by advertisers who rely on a functioning national economy.

All the commercial news outlets have pivoted massively over the last month to supporting vaccinations, burying the ‘bad news’ vaccination side effects and pushing for a return to normal ASAP because they know whose hand feeds them… SevenWest too has seen the writing on the wall, thank goodness.

This is really lethal news, and good if it frees up some spaces. I understand they are overcrowded, and like medi-hotels were not designed with good safe ventilation. Instead enhanced air movement so tear gas can get into every nook and cranny. With full capacity - they cant play musical chairs. Do we know the vaccination rate in the clink? Nothing some IVM can't fix. Like nursing homes and hospitals, without mandatory full vaccination, it was just a matter of time.

The original question is why are we still hotel quarantining people *now* - as in today - when there are so many in the community that have covid but can Q at home.

my answer was that we know the strain of covid currently in the community. Those coming in could have a new, more virulent strain. As indeed did the first person that brought Delta to Australia.

I argued we need hotel Q until such time as we can set up proper home Q - that is, with an effective way to monitor and enforce.

So my argument has never been that we need hotel Q for returning Aussies forever. Just that as of today, we still need it.

Sky reported it was a nurse with an unrelated medical condition who had asked not to be assigned to covid duties
Unless there are two in ICU this is definitely fake news as I know a double vaxxed patient in ICU in NSW and this is not their circumstance.

I won’t add anything else due to wanting to respect their privacy.

In the interests of equal time:

this ivermectin bullshit — along with all the rest of the anti-vax nutjob liturgy — clearly and obviously should be considered in the same “beyond the pale” territory. Anti-vax cultism is literally killing people, including innocent kids with susceptible parents. There is no legitimate debate: everyone who can get vaccinated should get vaccinated, and dummies should not be self-medicating with horse de-wormers.

There will be a double vacc'd death from covid, no doubt.

The percentages are just overwhelmingly positive for vaccination, no doubt the media will go into a full frenzy and have headlines and flashing banners everywhere. truly the number of deaths in NSW for the number of cases is immeasurably better than last year in VIC which is due to the high vaccination rate of the elderly population.

A bit of a worry, the aged care worker in Echuca tested positive then negative so not sure what’s happened.C92848C3-BFD5-4215-B056-CF2C38E3D55B.jpeg

I thought people were also testing positive at day 13? The problem would be isolating at home and whether people actually follow the rules (we know quite a few don't). What about the family that come back to Victoria positive and then went to the supermarket? 'unintentional', of course
Yes I’m sure some people don’t follow the rules. But the only ones currently even given the leeway to fail to follow the rules are the Australian based people. There is no logic in this, especially now.

The point is clear, there are 15,000 people in Sydney right now at home that know they are covid positive.

Putting returned travellers at home who have a small chance of being positive is objectively less risky. There is no difference enforcement between the two groups.
Totally agree with you. It was always pretty silly, but now it is just plain ludicrous. I have been posting this on various threads for more than a year. It’s all part of the demonising of overseas resident Australians. Even double vaxxed, tested negative people have been forced to hotel quarantine, whilst people who definitely have COVID are just trusted to to do home quarantine. It is total lazy BS that this policy has not been change. The caps should be scrapped too.

I did say at work the other week that pretty soon if you supported mandatory quarantine, a "cough* off we're full" sticker would be advisable to advertise the fact...

Maybe AP can get the federal government to pay for those...

I am a solid PRO vaxxer, and had both AZ shots 12+ weeks apart. I fully encourage vaccination, and told all my friends to beat the rush and get it early. I even suggested mass vaccination centres when the Cwth Govt was activity preventing NSW from doing this. And I am pro booster too, knowing 3 shots, plus probably yearly is now a reality. I am pro mask too. And I was always for compulsory vaccination where it would save lives or save lawyers suing negligent entities.

I am not a binary person, and am open to doctor specialist led evidence. Fauci takes Vit D and C and probably a bit more. Never claimed that chemical worked. Although this week, I would say the British conclusions are wrong. Vaccine approval is dependent on no other treatments available. Vaccines work, is a fact.

Taking your average correctional center, the inmates have a large range of problems that I dare not stereotype. Hep and diabetes add to the burden and risk profile. I would think getting 75% vaccination in a prison and staff next to impossible, without incentives. Plus there is a doctors shortage, ambos are ramping. Plus even if most had the jab, there is waiting time for it to take effect. All things considered, zero in that setting is grim. The leadership decisions, going forward, will be very interesting. I don't think they have a plan B or C. Politically illusion and deception is the best described as the power of placebo.

We know from the start of the pandemic when we initially allowed home Q that lots of people weren't compliant. Yes there are visits by police/ADF/authorised officers, but there are still cases where people aren't at home.
You keep saying this as if it is only naughty overseas Australians who would do this. Most of whom are not covid positive and are vaccinated. We trust people with actual covid to quarantine at home. Continuing to force overseas arrivals into HQ is just ridiculous At this point.
