Emergency landing as plane's engine fails (AA at JFK)

AN American Airlines passenger plane made a safe emergency landing today after an engine failed, sending shards of metal into housing below, aviation officials said.

The plane, a McDonnell Douglas 80, landed safely at New York's JFK Airport on one engine, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Jim Peters said.

Initially pieces of metal were thought to have shot from the stricken engine into the fuselage of the plane. However, "all the metal that was dislodged from the engine went out the rear of the engine" and plunged to the ground, Mr Peters said.

The metal pieces "embedded themselves in a roof of a building" in New York's Queens neighbourhood, he said.

With all these recent incidents it is amazing that people on the ground have not been hurt, or killed, by falling debris.

Well AA is slowly replacing them with 737-800's ... slowly! I think there are many, many more air hours left for the old birds!

I seem to recall the first few of the turned up with AA interior design as well.

The second half of 2001 was not a time to be taking delivery of new aircraft ... unless you were filling the gap left by a the demise of a competitor that previously held about 40% market share.

AA had a problem, needing to park many aircraft and not having the finances to pay for the new deliveries.

QF had a problem, needing aircraft quickly to plug the whole left the AN's failure.

Boeing we happy to take QF's money at a time when few airlines around the world were wanting to expand. QF and DJ were both able to ride out the tough period that faced most airlines around the world for the few years following the events of September 2001 (both what happened in New York and DC, as well as what was playing out in courts and officers of administrators in Australia).

Imagine what QF's domestic fleet would look like now if the 737's were not re-routed from -823 to -838 models.

Hmm, I am now reminded that some of these 737-838s are 7 1/2 years old! How time flies.
