Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

(Not saying I agree) Well she will be letting it rip into the whole of Australia, acting on behalf of all states because there is no way an uncontrolled outbreak of Delta could be contained to NSW, even amongst an unvaccinated 20-30% of the population.
We should be worried for the ineligible-to-be-vaccinated kids under 12.

Dr Young still only talking of risk of death from Covid being for people over 60. :(

Has she not been following what is happening in NSW from Delta at present?

Has she also never pondered that people under 60 who are not vaccinated tend to be the ones who infect the people over 60?

(Note that she actually just stated that younger people are more likely to transmit!)

In my opinion, such comments undermines the entire public confidence in health advice.

I expect that all ships require a local pilot to board and steer the ship into port. If there is an outbreak onboard then medical personnel will come into contact with ship personnel.
There are ten foreign crew members in hospital in Perth right now and positive but not unwell crew remain aboard two ships. Medical staff and ambulance members went aboard in full PPE. The ships notified port while outside the port that they were infectious. I did not hear if a pilot went out to the ship.

Further tightening of the Border bubble. Now only 6 essential reasons to cross the border and non essential travel beyond the border now prohibited.

Snap, I posted it a bit earlier on the state border restrictions thread. The reporter didn't note necessary goods and services (which is clearly the first reason on the photo of the Vic Health Minster's statement).

The problem with the WA shipping situation has deteriorated. WA government has implemented it's own set of restrictions on shipping lines above the federal government. Not sure how I feel about it.

Mr McGowan also announced he will stop ships from entering West Australian ports unless they meet strict new rules that apply if they have come from "high risk" countries.

In recent weeks, a number of ships carrying COVID-positive sailors have travelled to WA, with 13 of the state's 15 active cases of COVID-19 stemming from either the MV Darya Krishna or the BBC California, both of which are berthed in Fremantle Port.

The new rules apply to ships that have stopped in jurisdictions, such as Indonesia, that have been deemed "higher risk" by WA Health authorities.

Under the measures, ships will not be allowed to change crews in those ports, sailors will not be allowed on-shore visits and maritime workers boarding vessels must wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

PCR testing of workers boarding the vessel will also be mandatory, as will rapid antigen testing of the crew onboard every two days, from when the ship arrives in the high-risk location to when the ship enters WA's waters.

Mr McGowan said evidence of negative tests could be made a condition of entry to the state.

"This is all about setting a new standard for the shipping industry so we can ensure we keep WA safe, especially given the highly-transmissible delta variant," he said.

WA Premier says state reserves the right to lockdown as national cabinet agrees to path out of pandemic

A bit weird that Qld are for the moment sticking to ending lockdown at 4pm.
Extended to 4pm Sunday, so an 8 day lockdown (for now).

In the Qld outbreak there are a lot more kids under under 12..........may be important to see how serious their condition gets
Yes scary, 10 cases today in the 0-9 age group (not sure if that includes the 2 overseas acquired cases). May be a lot more workers forced to stay home indirectly by closures of schools/childcares.

Interesting that the report on news.com(.au) this morning said that NSW will lift their lockdown earlier than expected, as soon as they reach 70% vaccinated.

So the PM's release of the 70% and 80% targets now seems unrelated to public demands for a timetable, but rather finding a way out of the lockdown for NSW.
So all the leaders from other states agreed to the plan so that the PM could give a leg up to NSW?

The plan is a pivot. Everyone wants a date, but the Feds know giving a date is affected by too many variables. However, giving a % enables all of us to extrapolate, track progress etc.

The numbers today still demonstrate that NSW has held the curve down, not flat but moving much less steeply than the worst of previous outbreaks.

I dunno whether the other states were aware that NSW was going to use the 70% for the purposes of ending their lockdown?

For months the Cth had refused to provide any sort of timeline or vaccination targets. Then all of a sudden we get one... which sounded great. But I suspect we now know the real reason why.

The 70% target is the point at which states have agreed to stop locking out each other, it has zero to do with when states ease restrictions within their own state.

NSW has not agreed to keep greater Sydney in the current strict lock down until we reach 70% vaccination, no state has. When cases are manageable, localised restictions will lift. Other states can choose to keep NSW locked out, but Gladys has stated our restrictions will lift over time (not a big bang) and we can expect more freedoms than we currently have before the 70% target is reached if case numbers fall.

It wasn't all of a sudden - the Doherty Institute was looking at this for a substantial period of time - since 2 July since National Cabinet announced the 'freedom' plan I believe

That’s not the agreement unfortunately and it was only an nod of the head ‘in principle’ at national cabinet which was shortly unpicked by WA within 5 seconds… unsurprisingly.
