Indeed Pushka.. my grandsons are growing up and I have little hope of sharing...s88t happens..
We all have crosses to bear ….. but complaining just makes it all seem worser...

I don't see how this is realistic. States will always have the power to close internal borders unless there's a constitutional change. That's probably unlikely given the popularity of border closures with the electorate.
I don’t understand why people keep blaming the states when the absolute failure of the federal government in vaccination orders and rollouts have in reality left them no alternative. The state that was the “gold standard“ and “it’s not a race“ has condemned us all into lockdowns for the next 12 months. Appalling and unfortunate but foreseeable and true.

I missed my son's wedding in the UK three weeks ago. I want to go to a reenactment in June next year. I'm just a mum who wants to see the most important event in his life.
Completely agree family is most important, by a long stretch, but you have to know many around the world have lost many many loved ones over this pandemic.

You still have your son & that's so important. Many great family times ahead that many aren't able to no more

Well, none of us knows the future do we? We have to take advantage of what we have now. Carpe diem. But that opportunity has been taken away because of these restrictions. No other country has stopped people exiting their country. So maybe we have the right to complain

Doesn't the issue lie with the very nature of Australias so called Federation where each state Premier can do and say whatever they like regardless of what the Federal Govt might want to do. Possible to suggest that even with an excellent vaccine roll out we would be stuck with premiers doing only what they think will get them reelected.

What you describe is the definition of 'federation'. It is a collection of self-governing states that join under a central government that has powers over certain matters. If we had wanted a single unified country, that's a different model that we could have gone for.

I guess the pandemic has highlighted the difference between how many people thought Australia operated, and how it does in reality.

It sure wasnt taught this way in schools! Shame we didn't get a say back in the early 1900's.....

I think the pandemic has highlighted that states have experienced previously unimaginable power and used that power with devastating consequences including locking out their "citizens" (sic).

History's judgement wiil be, I think, not favourable.

I’d change that to “many people thought Australia should be operated……”

I’m seriously questioning my loyalty right now.

I think I’ve hit peak ‘shut the f*&#$ up‘ level.

How nice would it be that there is not constant ‘experts’ commentating on what should be done differently and what lockdown measures should be in place, politicians point scoring and saying what they’d do, journalists over amping the everyone is scared and confused message etc.

It creates so many sound bites and general noise that it dilutes the critical health and government messages.

Think people are confused about the rules? - that’s because it can be hard to figure out what is actual vs what is commentary.

And this is coming from someone who has English as a first language and University educated, and with pretty decent ability to easily comprehend and synthesise large amounts of complex information.

Does any body actually believe for one second the states are going to follow this? Do you think WA won’t slam down it’s border on whatever justification it feels like regardless of former agreements (like it does now) and conversely does anyone honestly think if NSW achieves 70 or 80% vaccination first it is going to wait and not push for (and likely get) international flights just because another state is dragging the chain?

Yes. A stinking pile of cough. The only hope is serious push back from those who have influence.

But strange how the 'confusion' always seems to lead to under-compliance rather than over-compliance?

If the rules say there are five reasons to leave home, those who are 'confused' never seem to think there are only three reasons to leave home... they always seem to make it eight or nine reasons they can leave. 😷

National Cabinet seems like a whole lot of nothing again. The States are allowed to lock us up until well into 2022. Awesome. Nothing interesting happening until 80% double vaccinated. Yawn.
We asked for a target, they gave us one, seems a start to me. For those who complain about dates, for once I agree with the PM, it’s in all our hands to achieve this. And I’m absolutely in favour of a target being outcome rather than date based.

We could argue for ages about the target but at least now we know what we need to aim for. I’m by no means a fan of our PM but for me this is definitely a step forward.

I wonder what percentage of the population gets the fluvax.
Excellent question. Wish a journalist would ask that so get some context around how achievable it is.
Edit found this a lot less than where we need to be.

According to this article which draws from the 'flutracking' site, the number of Aussies getting the flu vaccine by May 2020 dropped by half from the same period the previous year. In 2019 it was 71.8%. So the 70% target may be achievable... 80% may be a push.

I suspect the 70% was carefully set to allow Aussies to return home for Christmas with some sort of home quarantine.

That's true return home for Xmas would be a huge bonus.
As we get nearer, I can imagine the holiday period flight cost?
Time to book reward flights etc is now.

Humans certainly do love round numbers.
Imagine they said 68% & 81% as part of the plan.....I can't, they wouldn't, ha!
