Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

If it were, you'd think with lag and reporting periods it would be the early indications (and I'd hope that isn't the case), since you're getting tests that might be taken when one is symptomatic (let's say 2-3 days after infection) where a swab test may then be up to 1-2 days, and only if they made it into yesterday's 8PM cycle do we know about it today.

This reference says Delta might be expected to go from positive infection to PCR test result in 3-5 days, so that would also suggest a very early indication if it were the case: When should I be tested? How soon will I be contagious? Are things different with Delta? | MIT Medical
My take is that if irresponsible enough to participate at that weekend event - unlikely to volunteer for testing given that (1) ‘ Covid is just a minor sniffle‘and (2) ‘I don’t care about doing the right thing. My individual freedoms are more important ..even if I infect my family and friends’
……. Maybe we will only see such people (and or their families) seeking ‘involuntary‘ medical care ie so sick they need ICU +/- ventilation and too breathless to educate us on their views about free-dumb

EDIT ADDED: The worker was not vaccinated.
OMG, he worked at a COVID testing station and was not vaccinated???? That's up there with the COVID ward clerk who was not vaccinated, and the Air crew limo driver who was not vaccinated. Maybe none of them personally have suffered more than a bit of flu, but the damage potential for others and the pain inflicted by lockdowns and further family separations is just appalling.

Honestly, what is wrong with people. I truly despair that we will ever get out of this mess, given this level of complacency or willful stupidity or laziness or "bullet-proof-ness" or whatever you want to call it.

Just get vaccinated already.

I’m not sure it was their fault. Yes, working where they did, they should have been vaccinated by their employer (govt). However they weren’t prioritised as “health workers” so had to wait for their age group to come up and then wait for an appointment.

Is that the guy’s story?

ADF now, for compliance? What powers will they have?
I think we are in agreement here @DC3. As a former member of the ADF, I feel pretty uncomfortable with using the ADF in this way. ADF can certainly provide aid to the civil community, as happens regularly in bushfires, floods and other emergencies, and in relation to COVID could probably provide medical aid too, deliver food and medicine parcels, do welfare checks and assist with information doorknocks etc. But to use the ADF for compliance against Australian citizens seems to be inappropriate and a role that is more suited to the civilian authorities such as the police.

Here in the ACT, I am a volunteer firefighter, and we have all been requested to volunteer to assist the ACT Government in various ways such as making welfare check phone calls, which is appropriate I think.

Aren't all those working at Covid testing facilities classified as "Frontline health workers"? Or just those who are medically qualified as a physician or nurse?

Well obviously not good or sensible, but equating their exposures as the same is quite some stretch as he was a traffic controller working outside directing the vehicular traffic. In theory should not have been mixing with the testing staff.

Limo driver sits within the same car as the aircrew, breathing the same air.

Desk clerk sits at the desk that positive people pass and staff treating them pass. ie Breaths exposed air.

Given that there is little to zero data yet on whether AZ or Pfizer has any impact on a pregnancy initiated after being being vaccinated, with a little more on pregnancies existing before being vaccinated - then I can quite understand the hesitancy especially if anyone mentions Thalidomide to them. It will only be in three or four years time that the question can be answered with any degree of certainty. Hopefully, it will be a non-issue.

CV can certainly cause more issues if it is widespread in the community but until June 16 that was not a consideration.

Personally, I feel extremely lucky (relieved) that this did not happen 20-25 years ago - I would not want that added concern. The relief felt after the birth of each child, and subsequently confirmed to be 100% healthy etc - cannot be described, I'll never know what winning lotto a few times in a row feels like but it may be something similar.
I really agree with you @RAM - it's terrible choice to have to make. And I'm glad not to be making this decision myself right now.

But this article from ABC news today also pulls hard at the heartstrings.

And the two residents at LaCrosse have both gone into hotel quarantine today.

The video footage showed them quite peacefully walking along wheeling a wheelie bag following a quarantine official to be transported. So no being dragged away.

Really I am not sure of the truth or relevance of these claims that they were not vaccinated by their employer. And I am not at all attacking you @Port Power in saying this, because none of us, except those individuals can ever know the truth.

However, I do know that as a volunteer firefighter in the ACT, in the non-fire season when I usually do absolutely nothing at all related to my volunteer role, I was offered a 1b vaccination by my "employer", the ACT Government. So I do find it a bit hard to believe that traffic controllers at COVID testing clinics and hospital staff in COVID wards, who are also employed or contracted by the state Governments were not also able to get a priority vaccination if they wanted one. Of course it means they might have had to go looking for it, and clearly a lot of people just cannot be coughd to do that. I don't know the situations of those specific individuals, but it does look pretty pathetic to be working in those roles and say "oh dear, my employer did not offer a vaccine to me, so well, it must just be OK to take the risk." You know, if that happened to me, I would be asking questions and following up.

Limo driver might be a bit different, as I understood he was a sub-contractor to the actual government contractor, and so perhaps further down the "food chain". Although I am pretty sure I also recall some media reports that he was not willing to be vaccinated because he did not want the AZ and was hanging out for Pfizer.

Quite willing to accept that different state have different ways of doing things, but at least in the ACT, it's not only the testing staff that could give him COVID, but the punters coming in for testing.

In the ACT, they make you wind down your window and talk to the traffic controller at the entry to the queue. At this point in the ACT, you do not have to be wearing a mask, although courtesy and common sense would suggest that it would be a good idead - however, many do not. next step, wind down the window and talk to the intake nurse as you hit the back of the queue,, get given some handouts and a mask to wear. Then again at any point if the traffic controller approaches you - they did not approach us on our last test, but did approach other cars in the line. Window down, chit chat (although wearing a mask) and then do whatever they tell you (eg seemed to be about starting a new line). Then finally into the tent and talk with the medical record keeper (mask on) and finally to the brave testers (mask off).

I do accept that things may be different elsewhere, but I can definitely see how that could happen.

NSW Contact tracing is seriously and dangerously overwhelmed. Even more so it is acting in what can be described as an irresponsible manner.

For example: A shopping centre in Randwick send out an alert yesterday:

Still not shown on Dept of Health web site location page as of posting:

And dates back to exposure dates of July 20th, 21st & 23rd.

A little while back I started logging every update made by NSW Health as I had noticed that the delays in listing locations was now at the maximum of 14 days (today - 13 days) which is only how far back they are announced or listed on the website.

So on July 25th, old date added was July 12th, then for the 26th it was July 13th, 27th the 14th, 28th the 15th.

After much spreadsheeting fun:

Weighted avg days prior to listing date is calculated by the sum of (number of days before listing date x number of locations visited on that date) for each date covered in that days 'updating'. If one location is visited 5 separate times on the same date then it is only counted once.

Up until late June the W.Avg days was 2.something, oldest was 5 days.

Now I've been updating this as each new day passes, and thought today I noticed a new venue listed but shown as updated two days earlier, the 27th.

Sure enough the venue was not shown in yesterday evenings listing anywhere. Yesterday was the 28th, so how could it be updated on the 29th but listed as last updated on the 27th?

So I went through and redid the figures for all listings shown as 'last updated 27th July' and found that the number had gone from 93 to 103, yet that change happened either late on the 28th or earlier today.

If someone checks to see new locations/dates added, with a very good memory, had not gone through the entire list including previous days - then they would have missed these new venues or new dates entirely.

Is this how some of the spread is happening?

That's what I call irresponsible, bordering on the negligent - certainly not helping in the effort to stop the virus spread.

Equally being 13 days behind with the dates of venues listing means up to 7 generations of virus spreading since.

Somebody goes to the website today and sees no venues listed in their nearest shopping area & decides ok, I'll go do some shopping as its all clear. They come home, develop a slight runny nose but convince themselves its nothing as there nothing in the area. Twelve days go by and they see that their shops actually had 7 visits by CV infected people the day before they went shopping.

VS:

The State Govt admitting there is a massive backlog of tests being processed, people being contacted, locations being listed etc etc. The friend who notified me of the Randwick notification, had been there on the 20th, around the same time, checked in with the QR code and as of 6pm had not been contacted nor received a text.
_____________________________

Which would make people a little more thoughtful about whether they really needed to go out shopping every day?
_____________________________

To be fair though. On the 25th, I noticed that there were four locations detailed as visited on the 25th.

This is the 1st & only time over several weeks that a same day listing has gone up - let alone four different locations. So perhaps it was a worker who is required to have the test done every 3 days? If so, very big tick for surveillance testing, given the quick turnaround possibly a nurse/doctor.

On the flipside, the delays in processing seem apparent with no cases listed for the day prior for the 27th, 26th, 21st (3 days prior), 20th. For the other recent days there was only 1 location listed for the prior day. Except for the 28th with 4 locations.

Go back to the 16th & before, for example & 1/4 to 1/5th of all locations listed were from the prior day. Since the 19th it has been less than 1% on average.

… to use the ADF for compliance against Australian citizens seems to be inappropriate and a role that is more suited to the civilian authorities such as the police.
Effectively, ‘Aid to the Civil Power’, supporting civil authorities in their performance of law enforcement tasks.

Short of some sort of insurrection, I can’t see why this power is authorised. I would hate to have been told to do this sort of thing.

A few incorrect statements today especially that there is no evidence of vaccine safety in pregnancy. In fact there is a lot.both Israel and the USA using mRNA vaccines have shown no evidence of harm.the real world data in the UK and Canada has not come up with any problems with the AZ vaccine.
Here it would still be recommended that Pfizer is used as the great majority of pregnant women are under 40.
A local discussion that has this piece of evidence.
Around 58% of pregnant women in the UK have declined the vaccine. The main reason for declining is waiting for more evidence to reassure them it’s safe for their baby.

One in ten pregnant women admitted to hospital with COVID symptoms in the UK go to intensive care. These women are more likely to have a baby born early (preterm), develop high blood pressure, need a caesarean during labour and become very ill, particularly after 28 weeks.

More than 100 pregnant women have been admitted to hospital in the UK in the past couple of weeks with COVID; none had received both doses of the vaccine and five had one dose.

Meanwhile in the US, more than 130,000 pregnant women have received a COVID vaccine to date, and the data so far is reassuring. Side effects such as getting a sore arm or headache or feeling tired are common but don’t appear to affect the pregnancy.

So no pregnant women admitted to hospital recently with covid has been fully vaccinated. Those who are admitted without a vaccine job have a 10% risk of being admitted to ICU.Basically another no brainer.get vaccinated.

Pregnant women have had many vaccinations for many years without major problems.

The Rubella vaccine is contraindicated in pregnancy. However most Australians are vaccinated for rubella.Anti vaxxers however are taking a gamble with their daughters and grandchildren's lives.
