Hi brains trust,

Sincere apologies if this has been asked before but my searching did not find anything.

Getting increasingly harder and harder to travel (and risky) but I have until 31st July to book travel so my membership is extended a further 12 months.

Was wondering if anyone has booked & paid a one way ticket but not actually board the plane and still received the status extension?

Thanks

Just book as far in advance as you can, then you’ll get the extension and can cancel for full refund under current rules.

They won't rescind the status extension? I thought the extension is on the proviso you fly between now and 31st Dec 2021.

On the proviso you book by your anniversary to fly before Dec

It is. But I have not heard of anyone having their status rescinded.

Who knows. I’ve not seen any reports of such. Plus in the current CV environment, you can postpone the flight and put it in credit so seems like one should still qualify.

As others have noted, the requirement is to book a new flight between 23 November and the end of your status year.

And as I noted on another thread, the T&Cs do include the following statement:

If the booking is cancelled, will my status still be extended?

We will extend your status if you’ve made a booking in line with the requirements and Qantas cancels the flight you’ve booked.

If you cancel the booking, you will need to make a new eligible booking before your status end date to qualify for the 12 month extension. (emphasis added.)

However, the T&Cs are silent on what happens if your status has already been extended before you cancel the booking.

I agree with other comments that it is highly unlikely that QF will cancel the status extention, once it has been extended.

Why not just book a couple of flights for dates after your status end date (31 July) and before the end of the year? Your status will be extended. If QF cancel one of those flights, your status will stick as per the policy outlined in the FAQs above. Even if QF don't cancel any of them (and you end up cancelling all of them), it is unlikely that QF will reverse the extention.

I note that my +1 had her status extended at the end of March on the basis of booking a flight in accordance with the rules. She hadn't taken any flights between 23 Nov and the end of March.

Thanks all.

I can't recall if there is a cancellation fee waiver for red e-deal fares currently?

Or should I book a flex fare so no cancellation fees are incurred?

I believe only a one way booking is sufficient to extend the status?

I think flex booking that U cancel has a 99AUD fee. If you book red deal, you can rebook fee free as much as U need, fare difference will apply.
Currently the most generous booking condition is classic flight rewards, that you can cancel for free. I believe everyone agreed that classic flight rewards count for the extension, we should have some members that can confirm from experience now.

I read and re-read the t&cs and took a copy. It seems like classic flight rewards qualify so I've taken the punt and made a classic flight rewards booking.

As it was I mistakenly booked for a week when I already had local travel plans so I'm going to have to reschedule anyway.

Fingers crossed it all works out.
