The Whisky Club discussion

June also has two Larks - a Tawny cask and a Sherry finished cask strength. Can see both being very popular.
My interest will depend on the price. I generally find (for me) Lark to be overpriced, especially for 500ml bottles. While I am sure these are very nice whiskys, my budget constraints rarely reach the Lark Level.

My Bladnoch arrived today, boy am I excited; just waiting for 5pm as I don't think my employer would share my same enthusiasm if I cracked it open at my desk.
What did you think, pistons? I cracked one of my bottles open during the Facebook Live with Nick Savage last week and I am a big fan, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Will give next month a miss, Lark is overpriced for what is is (in my opinion), and the Glenfiddich doesn't excite me that much.

July Whisky of the Month is the Tomatin 2009 Verdejo Cask Limited Edition. Previous Tomatin examples have been great. I'll be taking this one in preparation for an annual "Boys Night" scheduled for later in the month.

And for those wanting a local variant, the Starward Fresh Red Wine Single Cask is also on offer. And of course this is very much on-topic for AFF since the Starward distillery is located in what was once the Qantas maintenance hanger at Essendon airport.

A quick post here to once again thank AFF members for using referral codes posted in The Whisky Club Referrals thread (Whisky Club Referral.). The mini drams supplied when referred members become "active" members of The Whisky Club change over time. So far the following have been included in the referral bonus drams:

Tobermory 10yo.jpgBalvenie Caribbean Cask 14yo.jpgBalvenie Doublewood 12yo.jpgStarward Fortis.jpg

Has anyone seen any other minis delivered through the referral system?

I can't add anything to that collection, and I don't have the Fortis.

However, I did buy the anCnoc special add-on that included a 1975 mini... yet to open!

And I have... The Club Advent Calendar

All that said though, I'm rather looking forward to the Westward Whiskey Single Malt Rum Cask next month. Shame there's no age statement, but 62.5% ABV for the price ($135) isn't too bad!

Yes, that does look interesting and I will not be opting out in August.

Had a pool and cards night with some old friends last night (yes, we can gather together in SEQ at the moment) where several recent drams were shared. The Tomatin from July and Hellyers Road 16yo Pinot Noir finish received exceptional response from those present, as well as the 2003 Grand Tawny from Ocean View Estates, which the AFF team had the opportunity to sample directly from the cask recently.

Hi all - I don't know much about whisky at all and would like to buy a friend a special bottle to say thanks for his help. I'm happy to spend $100-$150. I'd appreciate a few suggestions please - I know it's all subjective but something that is maybe classically good.

Here are a few examples that are not too "specialist" in their flaour (not too smokey/peaty etc.) from well respected distilleries that I expect most scotch drinkers would be very happy to receive, and easily available at most locations:

Feel free to send any of these my way ;)

Good suggestions above. Balvenie, Glenmorangie or possibly a Talisker or Glen Farclass 15 yo. Just ensure it’s a single malt.

Who else is eagerly awaiting this month's delivery? Who went for the Bushmills and who opted-in for the Lagavulin Offerman Edition? I am guilty-as-charged for both :)

I opted in for the Lagavulin Offerman Edition for myself, and purchased the Bushmills on behalf of a close mate as I'm not typically an Irish drinker; but this way I'll get to try it with him.

I also added in a bottle of the Bladnoch 2007 Cask Strength this month, as I really enjoyed it and have almost polished off my bottle...

...it was a bit of a splurge month.

---

Last month I opted out of the Aberlour 14Yr Double Cask and instead went the Launceston Distillery add-in as that's where I'm from, so it seemed fitting. I'll be interested to hear feedback from others whether I've made the right choice, once they've tried theirs! (My September order hasn't arrived yet due to Aus Post issues, but should be here within the next 3 days!)

Well, its that time of the month again (finally comes around) :). The GlenDronach Batch 10 Cask Strength is looking good, but at the upper end of the club pricing. Seems reasonable value for cask strength, though. I'm in for this one.

And a new Opt-In extra that has certainly taken my fancy this month. The Benrich The Smoky Twelve :).

And its only $105 as an opt-in. So a no-brainer for me. And if there is any left for December opt-in I may be back for more ;). I do like a good smoky/peaty when in the right mood, which seems to be more often that I have one open in the cabinet.

A few Lark options for Opt-Ins too. But for me, I'll be sticking with the two above to see me through the Christmas period.

What are others doing this month?

I have older offerings from these distilleries, but haven’t opened them yet'
The smoky seems a good bet!

I was keen to get both, but was a bit slow today and the Smoky Twelve was already waitlist by the time I got around to it!

Wow. It must have been popular. I have missed out on an opt-in before, so tend to make my decisions pretty early on the Friday morning now - lesson learned. Hopefully they may find some more somewhere, preferably next to a pallet of Lagavulin Offerman Edition ;)
