The opening ceremony at first seemed a little sad in an empty stadium. As it filled, I realised they were waving to athletes already in the stadium and obviously celebrating the fact that despite the obvious obstacles and in appreciating their own significant efforts, they were actually representing their country in Tokyo.

Thought the opening ceremony was interesting and very global as opposed to the usual cultural experience. The laser show was simply spectacular and the best part. The lighting of the torch was interesting but not spectacular. I thought it would never end though. Not many athletes left on the field for the post March which was a wise call.

Apparently it was much shorter than Beijing.

That said the speeches were way to long, and the athletes entering takes way too long.
Maybe countries could enter from alternate entrances - you really only need a 20 sec snapshot of each.

You could obviously tell that they cut back the numbers on the arena at any one point in time. The drone display was great, though too short.
And I like the hieroglyphics trio.

Could our team not afford two flags?, it looked coughbersome and silly with 2 athletes trying to wave one around…

Just not the same without the crowds....and athletes starting to drop out due to +ve Covid tests. :(

First gold won by China.

Ecuador looking good for male cycling road race.

Typhoon approaching (edit: - possibly Tuesday/Wednesday)

Great for the surfing comp.

None of the teams carried two flags so guess that is AOC rules. The speeches were just too long, agree. The Oz team just did a lap then exited. Wise move. Didn't see anyone from the Australian officials side.

Yes Ecuador wins it's first cycling gold medal.in fact it's first cycling medal.
the "pog" gets bronze just a few Cms off silver.

Second Australian Gold Medal - Ariarne Titmus women's 400m freestyle (0.23 sec off the World and Olympic Record)

Fiji win sevens gold, guess they have to produce another ‘7’ dollar note.

The Fiji team singing after winning and then their tears, was so moving.

I thought the live “pictographs” were so good. A really enjoyable moment amongst the overlong boring periods!

It’s about time for countries to go back to basics and put on a much more simple, short and moving event. It is not worth a city going into debt for a ceremony.
