Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

We have to learn to live with this virus. Once I’m vaccinated flying overseas to a place with high vaccination rates like the UK, coming home after testing negative and being taken by a fully vaccinated driver back to my home and quarantining there poses almost zero risk to the community. It’s not at all unreasonable. Add in some appropriate safeguards like a bond before departure and maybe ankle bracelets and it should work fine.

If "the greater good" is defined as keeping those who refuse to vaccinate safe, then I guess you are right. That's not my definition.

No one is asking for any significant changes before there is the OPPORTUNITY for all eligible to be fully vaccinated. Also, it is reasonable to expect your government to take all appropriate actions to secure vaccine supply (I do feel like this aspect is finally happen). But I disagree with your overall view - my USA parents may not be here in 2 years - or if they are, they may not recognize me. They are elderly, months matter. If you are young enough for the odds to favor that you do not have to think about this, well lucky you - but then think about who is only thinking about their own perspective. Also, my children are the "ideal grandparent age" - they adore their Aussie grandparents and cannot get enough of them - it is not "ridiculous" for me to want my USA parents to have some of this experience. You cannot get these years back. I do believe that many of the actions of last year were for the greater good - I supported most of them and forgave the ones that I disagreed with because the depth of experience of dealing with something like COVID was not there. That's no longer the case. There have been months & months to plan. The overall population has been patient - it is not unreasonable to expect your government to have spent time PLANNING - as in a real Plan.

Yes, a lot of people are happy with hard borders but that is "not normal" - it is extraordinary and should be viewed as something that should only be used for as long as absolutely necessary. I refuse to accept that "absolutely necessary" equates to "because people want it that way" or because "I am afraid of these vaccines".
Greater good I mean keeping ppl here in Aus safe from opening the borders.

Ppl here are asking / wanting changes, want to travel asap & before years end.
Want set dates of the 'plan', want certainty with so many aspects even thou so many aspects about life globally there is no certainty.
There's a lot of want & by getting the jab they think they deserve what they want, & anyone who doesn't give them what they want is wrong & has no idea.

The gov had a set timeline for 1st million or whatever it was to be vaccinated & missed the mark shockingly & was rightfully hammered for it. You think he's going to go again for 2nd trick pony? I think not.

If the gov did order half a doz vac's, ppl would be saying we don't need that many, what a waste of our money to order more than we need vac's.

2 vac's now is ample, with more types to come soon.

Just can't win with ppl that want exactly what they want themselves.

Am so sorry. It’s so hard. I get too furious if I think about how long it’s going to be - and how cavalier they are about the lack of timetable. I seem to recall the PM complaining about not being able to see his family for one night (was it his birthday?) - it’s just laughable how myopic he is as he condemns millions of people to long term separations.
It is up to you whether you choose to come back or don't choose to come back.

I have never ever in my life heard more whinging & it's all about me stories.

Ppl talk here like they are themselves all that's important in this country. Themselves.

It's a cry me a river every 2nd post.

I don't agree with everything the gov is doing, by a long shot, but gee Wizz, flame throwing going on non stop.

Grass is greener scenario here, big time.

Guess it's a forum to blow some steam off, but wow, amazing thought that lot of ppl out there are happy to keep international borders closed for now. Even those with family OS, some can deal with not seeing them for few years (me included) for the apparant greater good, 'for now'.

Knowingly shot down now if not moderated.
Time for you to go to those empathy lessons. Yes, the people who want to leave have deeply personal reasons for wanting to do so, you don’t think those who want the borders open aren’t doing so for personal reasons too?

Frankly can’t see how this comment is adding anything to the debate.

As for your subsequent comment, how terrible that we’d want our government to do what they say they will do, how unreasonable and selfish!

There is an element of blowing off steam in all of this, it's been a gut wrenching day to have hopes dashed, so understandably people are disappointed . So cry us a river if you like 🤣 😢

But given these caps are likely to be in place until 2022, I fully expect now the governments will announce that international sporting teams and international celebrities will be all under the same cap.

And like the cancellation of the SIngapore Grand Prix (and Singapore has a much more open attitude, and has already been taking 5-6 the number of international arrivals than Australia per capita) , that the Australian Grand Prix will be cancelled now. But bet your bottom dollar that it won't be.

I've given up suggesting that.

And that for me is the issue. As much as I hate international border closures if it applied to everyone it would be easier to swallow than the preferential treatment. The federal opposition are missing a huge opportunity here.

So Australians living overseas are second class citizens then?

Sorry but there's plenty more ppl wanting to leave for a holiday & break.

I thought poms were whingers, but I'm thinking Aussies taking over

Add per the thread I predict we'll be open to another country/ies bubble March 2022, 2 year anniversary of closing the borders.
Before then the Vax debate will drag on & border issue will do the same.

Yeah I said that, clearly.
Rightio type own narrative.

Put the kettle on.

If/when it does open up, I wonder how streamlined the arrivals process will be. Took me 3 hours to pass through the UK border yesterday, and that was taking the quickest route available.

Ah the irony of calling people whingers while having a whinge yourself!

Well said.

I would explain how you have wrong you are,
What are you trying to say? Really, calling me into question. You have no idea.
The level of ignorance you display is remarkable
How exactly? I am actually in Australia and living my normal life. You, it seems, are not here.

Interesting email from our friends in Toronto who travelled to the US for the winter.

We returned to Toronto in May from our place in Florida where we were fully vaccinated with Pfizer.

In spite of being fully vaccinated and after 3 negative Covid tests, we had to remain in quarantine for 14 days. Once we got home we couldn’t even go down the hall to take out the trash. We were warned that any violation of the quarantine rules could result in a 1 million dollar fine and 6 months in jail!

As part of Canadian rules, we had to check in daily on line to report our health condition. During the 2 weeks in quarantine, we received 4 or 5 phone calls at home to be interviewed by someone from the health department and we even had a personal visit to our apt. from a health department rep. just to make sure we were home and being compliant. Thank God for the caring support of our good friends and neighbours who made sure that we had groceries and made themselves available to give support in any way possible."

Soon they are off to Mexico. They plan to go to Ohio for their Thanksgiving. Given that Canada was in a bad place not that long ago, their recovery is miles ahead of where we are. They were fully vaccinated ages ago in the US.

in actual fact the miracle is that they didn’t ban foreign airlines and give Qantas the entire allocation. Would fit with the current No Foreigners Here mentality.
I’d be surprised if QF could actually run many flights at all. As the crew are required to be in HQ for two weeks after every flight, there would be very limited interest in doing that for long… HQ for two weeks is one thing, coughulative HQ for six months per year is something else entirely.

As for the plan…it’s a bit like an airline ops plan:
1. Let’s have an airline
2. We’ll go somewhere
3. We don’t have any aircraft or crew, which means we’ll be safer than those that do.

Sounds like an over the top reaction to vaccinated people returning negative results. What's the point of being vaccinated?

Getting to be at home? At the moment, that's no different to here in terms of the restrictions if you are fully vaccinated - except that you are in a hotel. I know which I would prefer.

Talking to the converted here! Canada did have a bad experience though but because of that their risk appetite is better. We have to try be patient. But that is the message I think needs to be sent to Fed Politicians of all colours. I'm actually liking the Greens and Penny Wong. I am sensing that there is a mood change once the youngies get vaccinated.

Ive decided that the Governments want to return us to our Penal Colony heritage.
