So feds have just published some new data re first and second doses by age and gender:

So roughly 70% of the over 70s have had their first dose. If politics didn’t get in the way with approx 70% of over 70s with both doses in 3-4 months and potentially a similar percentage of over 50s due to 50+ getting Pfizer we really should be having some easing of restrictions with things like home quarantine from highly vaccinated places like the UK for vaccinated travellers. The most vulnerable will have either been vaccinated or had plenty of opportunity to have been by then.

Once a majority of the vulnerable are fully vaccinated surely the polls regarding travel will shift especially as they see media reports of those overseas travelling much more freely than here.

You may be confusing me for someone else. As expressed previously, I have been all over the country in the last 12 months and largely unaffected beyond wearing masks in planes/airports. Business is booming and when international borders open properly, many will flock here for the many jobs I can offer them. And in Qld, who needs a doona. 23 degrees, winter day. PS. I have my 2 AZ + flu vaccination as have many of my friends and colleagues.
What does wear a bit thin, is a few that are stuck overseas continually assuming what our lives may be like; you could not be more wrong!

What is this Australia that you mention? There is no Australia any more, only separate (and separatist) states whose rulers rule absolutely. Let's not forget that Queensland hospitals are for Queenslanders, and that Victorians or Westralians who have had the audacity to go to another state can be totally locked out from returning to their homes, jobs, families, lives for long periods of time when their ruler calls a short notice border closure.

At this rate, I am sticking to my guess of 12th of Never for international borders opening. Maybe the month before that for reliable interstate travel.

There has been opportunity to travel interstate over the last year, I've had family travel to Queensland from Victoria. Things were on the up and confidence was good to travel around the country until Victoria's fourth lock-down.

The lock downs at the moment are to essentially squash the virus in the community before it gets out of control. Even though we have very low vaccination numbers our covid cases and fatalities are well over 95% lower than what the likes of the UK and US are experiencing at the moment considering their high vaccination numbers.

We need 80% of the population fully vaccinated to have any confidence to open up again and this will need to be a year on year approach.

Exactly.The healthy 18 year old if he does get covid is quite likely to be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms so unlikely to go for testing.However what if he visits his elderly grandparents on a regular basis and they then get covid and die.
Not only the 2 deaths but your heathy 18 year old is very likely to feel guilt and remorse and so continue to suffer for some time.

Though being unsymptomatic (and equally undetected) is what most who are vaccinated can end up being.

What is happening in the UK & US is revealing.

• UK - 7 day avg vs previous 7 day avg - cases up from 79k to 133k, and up 13x the early May figures. Deaths 101/wk to 113/wk.
• US - 7 day avg etc - cases 85K up to 91k, and 1/3rd early May figures. Deaths down from 2,159 to 1,800/wk.

Proportion of delta in UK is around 3x that of US. What stands out is the massive difference in preventing deaths in the UK relative to infections. Adjusted to per capita sees the UK having 1/3rd the per capita death rate but 7 times the case rate.

That is what is going to be the main issue with international travel opening up, after more transmissable variants that is.

Unlike how many of us think of being vaccinated - none of the CV vaccines make you immune just massively less likely to die from it & somewhat less likely to pass it on. However does not stop anyone from being a low visibility super spreader unless getting regularly tested for CV becomes a routine requirement globally - even if not travelling.

If interested, back in Feb 2021 the Washington Post did a good piece on efficacy, effectiveness & transmissability. No paywall for that article on CV.

We need to assess what is happening with regards to hospitalisation in UK over the summer. If that number doesn't impact greatly on their health services then I sense the mood that is already on the move, will change greatly.

Yes. Yes I do. I'm sure, I think I would know where I've been, but thanks for asking.
Take at look at recent Australian economic indicators (it's not just me).
Haven't met every single one (and you certainly haven't) , but I do meet loads of people in Australia. Most I meet are glad to have experienced COVID in Australia for last year and for those not vaccinated, are looking forward to doing so by the end of the year, when Australians may be finally welcome into the countries that we love to frequent overseas.
