Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I've booked a visit in June - this has me rethinking whether I should visit somewhere else
If you happen to be in Canberra, I think we’ll worth a visit. You get to try most of their wines including this highly praised SV. Very nice vineyard and picturesque if you sit outside.

See for yourself, their reds didn’t do a lot for me, but you may enjoy them.

while there - visit Home|Contentious Character|Wineries near Canberra & NSW for lunch and tasting. Expensive but very interesting and funky wines and great food

Any of these Pinots available at BWS?
BWS probably is not the greatest place to shop for quality Pinot Noir.

Don't limit yourself on the basis of cashback stacking discounts double 10% offs etc etc - there is a whole world of wonderful Pinot Noir out there - terrific wines from Mornington Peninsula, Geelong, Bannockburn, Gippsland, Tasmania, Central Otago etc etc that won't be there

Wine is global, my wallet is a country town 😁

Just fishing, you still gotta try! But i know, it was a stretch! I think I'm going to research for a while as I've spent so much lately.

Courier already has all my Mollydooker!

Agreed.

Browse the pinot thread also.

Keep an eye out for places like Edinburgh Cellars or your local Dan's as they often do varietal tastings. Work out what you like and pick them up on sale.

Buying wine just because it's cheap is a great way to accumulate a whole bunch of stuff you don't like.

Add me to this club too. I take visitors to the cellar door. They are generally left underwhelmed and baffled by the high price tags.

I’d suspect it’s less about the quality and more about people’s expectations of Australian Shiraz. Reminds me of comments made by one of Hunter Valley’s top winemakers who said most visitors who ask to taste his top Shiraz end up being disappointed because they are so used to Barossa / McLaren style. I’ve also heard similar comments about Yarra Valley Cab Savs...

I've subscribed to them.

How do we find out about local tastings at Dan Murphys? I have 5-6 pretty close to me.

I agree, when I first started I bought some really basic wine aka $12 but $35 Cellardoor price. It's decent, but I'd rather buy quality now. It doesn't stop me from thinking about saving tho 😁

As we know, wine tastes vary. IMO if you don't like the Clonakilla SV then that whole style of fragrant, fine boned, seductive, Rhone-ish (but not quite) wine may not be to your palate. It's usually the best representation of that style in Australia, vintage dependent of course.

Regardless of personal taste, its a great wine. I often feel this way about the RunRig; an exceptional wine that I don't care for much.

I think currently it works out at $15.50 per bottle.
Not sure if the ducks will ever be lined up like they are right now.
Picked up Piero LtCF today from BWS, two were 2013, rest 2015 (was hoping for a 2016 Xmas edition). Hopefully they were stored well... if anyone is interested, Granville has 27 and Chester Hill has 13 left.

I was in Murrumbateman last week. I wanted to go to Clonakilla but they were about to close so I went to Murrumabateman Winery instead.
I wasn't very impress by the service that I received ('what is this guy coming for a tasting on his own'). Wine presentation was done in 2 sec and then I leave you alone doing your tasting (I was the only customer). As I started talking and had obviously a basic idea about wines, the person became more talkative but I have met warmer people...
The full tasting was only 5 wines. One Riesling, Two vintages of Sangiovese, one Shiraz and one Cabernet Malbec
The wines were nice. Special mention the the Sangiovese (the latest vintage. The older one had lost all its fruits) and the Cabernet Malbec that were excellent.
I ended up buying one bottle and was charged $5 on top for the tasting. First time I pay for a tasting while buying a wine...

So overall, not the best experience. I still regret missing out on Clonakilla and will definitely try to make it next time as I love cool climates.

I love my Pinot and the other comments are right, it is pretty hard to find a good deal on a good Pinot.

Last year I subscribed to a regular delivery from Wine Selectors: Winemakers' Tailor Made and selected 12 Pinot. Cost is $332 for the dozen. Here is one of my deliveries (see attached)

Looks like BWS online is getting absolutely flogged by @Mynameislucluc

Mate hahaha, believe me after last Saturday I know there's absolutely nothing left. I spent like $600 yesterday alone. I'm done for a while, unless something special pops up!

I'll look into it 👍. Any favourites?

If anyone knows what to look for in French Pinots, shoot me a PM.

Theotherbordeaux sent me information about stock arriving, he mentioned as it's my first order he has some left overs and can give me pre-departure pricing. I just don't want to post a private link here. Thanks :)

It's worth visiting imo, I actually don't rate the whites, but I can see why the Shiraz Viognier is an icon. I would also pick up their Single Vineyards, but not sure how you get access to it.

Hilltops and O'Raida are fine too, but nothing special.

I also think there is a reason why this wine rates so consistently well, but it probably comes down to the style of wine you like.

Collector has been recommended to me a few times and next time we visit Canberra I would swing by there as well.

You and the Hunter Valley dude are probably right. Oils ain't oils. I judge a wine on what I know/like and that is based exclusively on SA reds. I never bother with anything else and won't until I run out of wines from there to try. There is an element of value though and knowing that an Octavius or St Henri could be bought for the same cash doesn't pass my pub test.

I would like to lay a little wager that by your measure of time "a while" would be less than a day.
Shopback seems to be down now - at least for me.

I enjoyed Collector - it is a tiny little cellar door that had fantastic Riesling that was dry as a bone.
(in my head I christened it The Bone Collector)

They also had their shiraz that everyone raved about and I saw locals walking in and buying it in cases. Was ok, but again a cooler climate that I am not crazy about.

Zacapa Centenario
23 Solera Gran Reserva Rum 700mL
I was looking at this, it's $50 after discounts. It's at $80, I know interstate at some stores already $55-65.

I mean no more wine, unless the discount and the wine is spectacular. I need to stick to my budget from next month.

Imagine what my broker will see when they check my credit card statements for loan approval!
