The Whisky Club discussion

I am not familiar with Linkwood, but the write-up reads well.
Agree, sounds very interesting.

The history suggests there's more to the distillery than meets the eye, and many would have indirectly sampled their offering before.

You may be wondering why Diageo hasn’t released a prominent Single Malt range from Linkwood. Well, there’s good reason. One sip of the 12 Year Old highlights the many nuances that the Linkwood distillery has to offer and showcases why it’s the backbone of the biggest selling blended Scotch in the world. You start to get flashbacks of Johnnie Walkers most famous blended malt, the highly regarded Green Label 15 Year Old. Why? Because Linkwood is one of the four distilleries being brought together to create this whisky.

Linkwood is also used in the creation of both the Johnnie Walker Red and Black Label releases, as well as White Horse and other blends, which while not sounding impressive at first, it’s important to note that the Linkwood component has enough structure and balance in limited quantities to blend with inexpensive grain whisky, bringing that to a much higher echelon of product.

It appears a third round of add-ins has materialised. Courtesy of no inbound travellers through Duty Free, they have snared some Octomore. I've always wanted some, having tried it at a Dan's whisky night a while ago... but it's also a bit of a novelty and ranging in price from $290 to $450 is a bit much!

Octomore 08.2 – $450

Octomore 09.2 – $350

Octomore 10.2 – $290

Very interesting, and I would love to sample some of these. But I am afraid $450 is a little beyond my capacity for an 8yo whisky (yes, I know age is not important). But I do love a well peated dram .... hmm, the temptation churns.

Octomore is beyond well peated. I recall my comment at the time was like someone had given me whisky that has been soaking in an ash tray :p though tastes do change over time!

Yeah, I got that impression from my brief research. Possible even a little too far for my liking, so not worth the risk for me. I'll stick with what I know I am likely to like. And for those times when I want some peat/smoke, I'll go a reasonably priced common option from Mr Murphy or similar.

More likely Lagavilin in my cupboard. Still upset that I missed out on the double-up on the Lagavilin Offerman Edition when it was offered through The Whisky Club. I learned the hard way not to procrastinate when it comes to double-ups.
Don't forget that ordering opens at 11:01PM tonight for us ;) if you can stay awake!

Looks like as April only started on Thursday, we're waiting till the 9th for orders to start.
I assume something to do with daylight saving time zones. The first Friday of April differs based on acceptance or denial of daylight saving encumbrance

Looks like we are in for cask strength (54.8%) Bladnoch 2007 Whisky Club special for the month of May. I'm up for that ;). And the bottles are a bit interesting too ;).

And its great to see more AFF-ers joining the club. Welcome, and I hope you are enjoying the membership deliveries :).

As noted, the Bladnoch is $135 and the Jack Daniel's $150. Unsure if there will be a further surprise later this week?

The sequel to one of the most sought-after whiskies is here and now’s your only chance to get a bottle.
Back in October 2018, Bladnoch released their first ever private edition: a superb 10 Year Old Cask Strength Created Exclusively for the Whisky Club. It had a huge waitlist at the time and has since become one of our (if not one of the world’s) most sought-after whiskies and judging by the massive demand for Bladnoch at auction recently that’s not at all surprising.

Now they’ve done it again one more time, only bigger and better than before...Introducing Bladnoch 2007 Cask Strength Created Exclusively for The Whisky Club.

There’s more to creating a whisky than simply marrying a whole lot of casks together and then releasing it at the desired ABV. Master Distiller Dr Nick Savage personally noses each cask in the warehouse every couple of years and writes down which direction the casks will take in terms of their release. Containing some of the very last remaining aged whisky in Bladnoch’s warehouse, this exclusive Whisky Club Release has been made by carefully combining first-fill American Oak and first-fill ex-Oloroso Sherry cask matured whisky.

Bladnoch’s spirit is the typical Lowland style of fruity, floral and grassy notes with a creamy mouthfeel, and the perfect base to add the sweet vanilla, honey and light spice of American oak casks. Once Nick had selected these casks, he added a similar amount of whisky matured exclusively in 500L Sherry butts. Not only do they bring the dried fruits, nuts and soft oak you’d expect, but most importantly they stretch the palate out, resulting in a tantalisingly luscious malt masterclass of freshly baked banana bread, creamed honey, chocolate-dipped strawberries and homemade blackberry jam. Bottled at 54.8% ABV pure cask strength, it’s non-chill filtered and natural colour.

This is the last Bladnoch private edition of this age and calibre as the distillery is running extremely low on aged stock and it’s certainly the last age-statement Bladnoch we’ll be seeing at the Club for a very, very long time. It’s only due to our very special relationship with the distillery that this never-to-be-repeated limited-edition sequel is even possible, especially at the special Member price of just $135; absolutely incredible value, so make sure you get your hands on this one! We strongly recommend you Double Up so you can savour the outstanding Bladnoch flavour that we all love. Bladnoch 2007 Cask Strength Created Exclusively for The Whisky Club is available this May. Be quick: Sign Up Free now to get your hands on a bottle while stocks last.

Strap yourself in for full-volume flavour. The iconic rock star of whiskey is putting on a show just for the Club. That’s right, Jack lives here.

Pure, unadulterated, and uncut... this Club exclusive Single Barrel, Barrel Strength release has been hand-picked by retired Master Distiller and living legend Jeff Arnett exclusively for The Whisky Club, and is as close you’ll get to tasting Jack Daniel’s straight from the barrel. It’s a full bore celebration of big Tennessee Whiskey, straight out of the Barrel House in Lynchburg, into the bottle at a hefty 64.5% and oozing with big, bold amplified flavours.
Plucked from the top floors of the Rickhouse where the heat intensifies the flavours, it's the Club’s first exclusive bottling from the world of Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey, and far from your standard Jack Daniels Old No. 7 release of over 150,000,000 bottles a year.

The deep rusty colour and rich aromas only add to the exceptional, intense flavour bomb that explodes in your mouth once you take your first sip. Wafts of pancakes covered in bacon and drizzled with maple syrup rise up from the glass before lemon and apple crumble settle on the nose. Bright orange zest, pineapple and toffee kickstart the palate before mellowing out into roast almond and cookie dough gliding into a bold, sweet finish of sticky date pudding, butterscotch sauce with notes of heavy charred oak — It’s a five-course feast of flavours in a glass.

With the Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Barrel Strength program having only started in 2015, we’ve not long been able to able to experience this untouched whiskey from the Lynchburg Distillery. If you enjoy any sort of whiskey, you’ll most certainly want to get your hands one. This Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel release is exclusive to the Club and available to Add In this May. Be quick: Sign Up Free now to get your hands on a bottle while stocks last.

I love Bladnoch and their style of whisky. Therefore, I have upgraded my membership to two bottles, reverting back to one bottle once this round of orders is finalised next week: I definitely want two of these and I didn't want to risk missing out when trying to double up on Friday.

Their Master Distiller is a big name in the industry, having done great things at Macallan and now at Bladnoch (for example the Waterfall, intriguing concept).

A good move for the circumstances.

I am torn between doubling up on the Bladnoch or take one Bladnoch and one Jack. I am not normally a bourbon drinker, but this one might be handy to keep on the shelf for visitors with a bourbon preference.

My Bladnoch arrived today, boy am I excited; just waiting for 5pm as I don't think my employer would share my same enthusiasm if I cracked it open at my desk.

Let us know what you think :). I am still working through my Dalmores, so the Bladnock will be waiting patiently for me in the cupboard.

The June Whisky is The Whisky Club exclusive bottling of Glenfiddich 14yo Bourbon Barrel Reserve.

So a mainstream name, but a unique dram. I am looking forward to trying this one.

June also has two Larks - a Tawny cask and a Sherry finished cask strength. Can see both being very popular.
