So obviously no one will be going.

Sigh.
yep.. all thanks to covid (aka china virus as per Trump) - I said china virus because I do honestly believe it came from there... and before anyone accuses me of racism, I am Chinese myself and know it is from China!

Athletes and coaches yes
And of course the most important people of any Olympics will be going...(they are not the athletes/coaches/anyone who has to purchase a ticket)

I hope you are not referring to those people who are still trying to get there to bring you a television coverage of the event.

Mind you, it is proving to be very difficult to achieve, trying to navigate both the Australian and Japanese regulations. For every Olympic Games, there are around 5000 Host Broadcast personnel involved from all over the world. Most of the Rightsholding Broadcasters (like SEVEN) will send minimal personnel (Interviewers and technical staff) and take all the feeds from Tokyo, adding commentary and studio talent in their own country.

Lol. No
There is one group who gets free flights, tickets to every event, gifts, bribes, and they stay in the highest class accomodation available - above level available to the people that really matter at an Olympics

This sounds like the group I should be in, how does one gain access?

how does one gain access?

I worked out when Miss QS was in the athlete pathway, there were 2 ways of getting to the Olympics.

One is via the athlete pathway, and the other as I described above.

Both get free accom, catering, free tickets to all events. But only one group gets in without getting sweaty.

How does one get access? If you have to ask you are not eligible.

As a parent who actually is the main financial backer of the athlete, I find it extremely galling that I have to buy a ticket while the “lords” get the red carpet treatment and I am made to feel that they are doing me and the athletes a favour.

Subsequently as a result, I quickly lost interest and no longer support the Olympics as a movement/organisation. I am not alone. The Olympics has been losing support. Multiple cities don’t want it and for very good reasons.

Cancelled my flights this arvo. Got a couple of notices a week ago about changed times - not that an hour here or there made a jot of difference if I can't leave the country.

But it least it gave me an opportunity to press for a full refund despite of the original conditions.

Thankfully SQ will come through. Just need to wait a few weeks for it to land in the bank.

Hotel next. Not sure how that will go.

I hope that will go well for you really soon as any money reclaimed is a great thing

We’ve just been told to prepare for (domestic) spectators at the Games… I found that surprising to say the least.

Unfortunately after some back and forth from myself, the WA Dept of Consumer Protection, and the hotel I had booked for the occasion, I'm still not going to get a refund. They're standing by their policies of offering essentially a voucher for future travel. I did try to get then to give me credit for their Accor properties here in Australia, but they wouldn't do it.

So I have about $3000AU in credit, useable until December 2022. Assuming I can get there at some point, I will try convince my wife to let Miss6 join me. As a dad/daughter thing I reckon it would be a great experience for us both. But there's a long way to go before anything like that becomes viable.

Which is why Brisbane will be hosting the 2032 Games. No other city is bidding for them as yet.

Not quite right. According to Wikepedia, a number of other cities on various continents were bidding but their bids did not compete with the Brisbane bid so lost out to Brisbane during the review process. The IOC has also restructured the bidding process to make it easier and cheaper to bid to try to limit the potential for corrution with multiple cities competing.

I do not dispute that the situation is proving harder for the IOC to get competing bids for the Winter Games. Not enough cities interested (or with enough regular snow) to make a meaningful bid.
