Hi all
Can anyone advise what a "normal" taxi fare at around 8:30AM would be from MEL to Hawthorn? I have been advised that Hire Cars service (I refuse to call a statesman a limousine) should only be used by the exec team so I am comparing the diff in cost between a taxi and a Hire Car service and will pay the difference myself (tax deductible of course ;))
Cheers
Simon

Last time I did from Camberwell (next suburb to Hawthorn) was around the $50 mark.

The last time I did that journey was April 2008 and from memory the fare was about $24.00?.
BTW,You may be interested in this company, their first class service is very good.

You'll cop a lot of traffic coming over the West Gate bridge and through the tunnel at that time of morning. I wouldn't be surprised if it was almost $70.

simongr - I have just tried to PM you but is says that you don't accept PMs - is your message bank full?

My apologies,I stupidly forgot that you meant MEL as in the airport,a silly mistake on my part,,the fare I gave you was from the CBD to Glenferrie Road, via Swan Street and was about $24.00,from the airport at that time of day then I would agree with an estimate of maybe $65.00-70.00.
Apologies again for misleading you.

Perhaps if you're footing the difference, just take a screen dump of the quoted fare (fiddle the times to get a price you like!) and then call the "limo" company. It's probably easier that way and you've got something on paper for the company so they'll prefer it.

Can I suggest that trying to get onto citylink at toorak is probably not wrth it - our friends in Camberwell usually go back way through Richmond and end up on Fleminton road and onto freeway that way - much easier.

Of course, if you have a "limo" guy, so much the better - they probably know an even better way.

Taxi fare in non-peak times from MEL to Oakleigh is around $85-$90.

Given Hawthorn's closer proximity to the city, and factoring in traffic, I would estimate around the $70 mark.

Mrs Shano used to pay about $85 for a limo service from Malvern to MEL.

Melbourne taxis scare me - every cabbie has had at least 3 mobile phones that go off throughout the journey

and generally they will have to look at the map to know where to go - usually while they are driving

between that and the "ghost taxis" that tend to pop up, I am not a huge fan.

All that aside - an individual driver may negotiate a flat rate with you, I am not sure if they should. But they do it.

There is nothing wrong with negotiating a fare, the only legal limitation is they can't charge more then the meter rates.

I believe that there is a restriction in place that prohibits the negotiation of fares for any trip < 80km.

To Kensington about $45 (including +++'s) plus 11% cabcharge extortion for using CC. So $65-$70 sounds about right. Not familiar with limo's .. I assume if paying by CC they also charge the extortion fee ... if not that may be a way if reducing the difference.

Oh and I wouldn't be a diligent AFF member if I didn't suggest drive yourself/hire a vehicle and pick up a few FF points on the way if you're in MEL for <2 days (can be lucrative if using Hertz -> bmi) ;-) I've done this a couple of times to/from home in lieu of taxi when I've had <24 hrs turnaround to my next trip.

Yes, i'd agree with the hertz option if stay <2-3 days. We routinely hire a car friday night, return sunday night. Heaps easier and winds up costing about the same.

Interesting on the hire a car option. I travel home to Melbourne every weekend, primarily 'cause I work in Wellington and normally just take the Skybus back and forth.

If only I can find a place to park the hire car, I might try that as well.

Taxi to Southbank from Airport is $60 including CC tax and citylink and everything else. So, Hawthorn for $70 sounds about right.

As for negotiating taxi fare, last Sunday, I got a taxi from Spencer St to Airport for $20 (just slightly more than the $16 skybus) and didn't know it was illegal to negotiate a <80 Km ride. Negotiation is definately possible, but probably not from the taxis that wait in the airport queue.

Cheers,

Sorry forgot to mention that I was talking from my epxerience as a QLD taxi driver.

I can only say that such a restriction only reinforces my negative opinion of Victoria as a joke state. :D What possible purpose can such a restriction serve? The government sets the legal maximum charge and this is reflected in the meter. So what if a driver agrees to charge less. He is only hurting himself or maybe the owner depending on the drivers payment arrangement. He is certainly not hurting the customer.

I often use a hire car when I have more luggage than I can comfortably carry on bus or train.

Tomorrow evening I collect one from the City and drive home. Saturday morning I will drive to MEL with my luggage and drop it off there. Cost in total (Hire, Fuel, Toll) of ~$60

Compare that to Taxi fare from my home to MEL of $120+
