Well not if they are Australian.... unless they play cricket, or want to join the British Trade Board, in which case they might get an exemption to leave the country...

....or are AFL footballers who can do just about anything they wish with a tut tut and boys will be boys.

The JOC is now proceeding under the assumption that the Tokyo Olympics (if any) will be held without general spectators.
Japan recently increased event crowd sizes from 5000 max to 50% capacity.

Aren't the spectators normally 50% of hangers-on and those in the know anyway. So maybe no general public.

Last I read it seemed more likely the hangers on would be the ones cut out, to the benefit of the paying spectator.

That may be my optimism talking mind you.

Are we talking about the same IOC? I certainly wouldn't be holding my breath that a leopard will change its spots.

Updated government plan (input to JOC) is to allow foreign spectators without vaccination (depending on the country of origin). Tourists will be required to install the COCOA app (*) and have it linked to their visa and ticketing information. The government is hoping the event will serve as a model for how to balance public health with human rights (freedom of movement).

Just put in my flight rebooking request with SQ, to use my 15% bonus credit. Still have to fork out some extra money due to the price difference.
The wife will not be pleased.

Good luck. Love to go, but wouldn't be able to afford an Olympics visit. If Japan one of only options for oversea's travel in 2021 may consider a quick September visit though.

Just bear in mind that Paralymics are still scheduled 24 August to 5 September 2021 so maybe plan for later in September as spectators (if any) sometimes visit other parts of the country after the Games end.

Just as an update, I have a contract to work at the Games for the Host Broadcast (not full-time, just Gamestime) so have been in contact with the Host Broadcaster and some of my colleagues regarding the likelihood of the Games proceeding. They are quietly confident and have many scenarios in play as they do want media coverage of the Games, even if spectators are limited. Nobody is really interested in doing quarantine in either direction so a vaccine is the best option. The situation will have to improve significantly in many countries or the number of athletes able to compete will be compromised. I think this still has a long way to play before we can get to an Opening Ceremony and a successful Games.

I seriously question whether the games can really happen now with the major lockdown with the different strain of the virus spreading like this

The no-spectator option is gaining favour now.

Downside is the loss of around USD870 million in ticket revenue. Upside is that a final decision on whether the Games could go ahead wouldn't need to be made until June. With spectators they reckon they'll need to decide by March.

The only other realistic option being considered at present is a 50% cap on spectators, which they'd implement by limiting attendance to people already in Japan.

Somewhere on a bulletin board in Japan there is a TYO_Traveller saying "If Melbourne can have the Australian Open, why can't we have the Olympics?"

I reckon it's the other way around. They are looking at the problems the Australian open is having with just a small cohort of 1200, and asking is it even possible to run the Olympics.

The US contingent alone would be more than that. Then you have to worry about the other 200 countries.

Sorry, I was referring to this chronologically ludicrous logic:
If Tokyo can run an Olympics, surely we can run a grand slam?
