Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

It depends on the vaccine type administered. The Pfizer one doesnt stop you contracting or spreading the virus, only from developing the disease. There is this huge misconception re the early vaccines they stop you getting the virus they dont.

If it is a vaccine type that prevents infection then yes makes sense to inoculate airport staff first. But if is just about preventing disease then the oldies, healthcare workers and other high risk first.

I think health care workers must also be in the priority group. Those dealing with potential walk ins who may have Covid. And those working with positive cases. If we bump up first line of defence then I agree that there is much less chance of it getting in to the community.
Priority yes.

But I would suggest to do anyone and everyone to do with arriving international travellers first as that is where the transmission risk is.

If all workers are vaccinated then hotel quarantines leaks most likely will not happen.

The number of healthcare workers and age care workers is vast. And while transmission from potential walks- ins is a risk it without community transmission is a lower risk than quarantine workers becoming infected, and so if you can prevent leakages from quarantine, then the transmission risk to health care workers elsewhere will be extremely low (ie just via leakage from seaports , air freight etc).

Yes. Agree. On the other hand it seems to be taking so long for states to implement mandatory testing of this group, I can’t imagine them getting their act together to do this as a requirement. Maybe mandatory too?

i doubt vaccinated people will get any exemption from hotel quarantine ro be able to quarantine at home until such time as vaccine is widely available to Australians.

The Pfizer vaccine stops you from developing the disease it does not stop you from getting the virus. Meaning a Pfizer vaccinated person can still be a carrier and infect others even if they do not develop any sumptoms themselves.

I weas just watching a interview with the US Project Warp SPeed lead scientist and he said even though they expect to be able to vacinate all americans who want it by end of June (subject to there being 4 vaccines available) people wil still need to practice physical distancing and good hygiene until 80% of the population are vaccinated to get to herd immunity.
Spoke to Dr FM and she said they think this vaccine will be like the Whooping Cough one, where people can infect other people but a much lower risk. However until they have data from large populations they really don’t know. She is anticipating still having to quarantine in February.

I can't find the word for it. But reading this thread at the same time my youtube feed is full of news from the US, I feel almost like that parallel universes have become accidentally intertwined. In Australia, understandably given where things are at, there's a lot of concern over 1 case. Meanwhile in the US, for each group of 25.6 million Americans, there were almost 17,000 new cases yesterday recorded and 225 deaths of people who are presumed to have the disease.

Is that completely true?

I know they don't know that it does, and they are warning that it might not stop you contracting covid and even spreading it - but I didn't not think they've reached this conclusion definitively. I didn't think they had the data to back this up yet.

So the NSW scenario is that the lady likely contracted the virus from cleaning the rooms of airline crew, likely from the USA. Pretty significant issue for airlines now.

Well according to my doctor daughter in London they just don’t know as yet and won’t until they have much more population based data. The potential is there but how likely is another thing - early days yet.

Different vaccines will have different pros and cons.

What this enables is that when the vaccine program is rolled out that the Gov may well choose to have particular groups use a particular vaccine.

ie Quaratine and Healthcare workers may be given a particular one as the concern might be say not just the health of the worker but also minimising transmission.

The elderly may be better protected by another type as their health is more at risk in terms of poor outcomes and so they might go for the one that protects their health the best.

With flu shots for example different groups are given different flu vaccines. With CV19 as there are so many different types of vaccines the tailoring could therefore be more.

Would this not have been the case for some time? I know that early on for example that there was at least one international Qantas Aircrew where a number of them caught Covid 19 while overseas.

Again air and sea crews will be a major group that will benefit from vaccinations.

Yes that's what I thought - your earlier statement was a bit definitive that it won't - but it could well do that.

International airline crews self isolate in hotels for short stays, they dont do 14 days supervised like arrivals do. They mostly need to ensure that cleaners have ppe and are trained to take extra care when cleaning their rooms.

If of course, they are told who the previous occupants were. I’m presuming they are required to stay in their rooms etc? Because they are no less risky that returning Aussies.

I don’t think I said it wouldn’t? I said it would be like the whooping cough one where it could but lower risk?

4pm news on 9 said they are investigating whether two American male cabin crew members breached the iso rules and left their room during their layover before flying back.

WA will make announcement on border with NSW on Monday

The WA Premier Mark McGowan says the state's border with Victoria should open on Tuesday as planned but a final decision on NSW travel will not be announced until Monday.

WA's plan to allow quarantine-free travel from both states from Tuesday was thrown into doubt after a hotel quarantine worker tested positive in NSW, breaking that state's run of 25 days without a confirmed locally-acquired COVID-19 case.

Mr McGowan today confirmed the latest health advice Victorian travel was unlikely to be impacted.

But he says a decision on NSW will be announced next Monday

Apparently noticeable tensions in the press conference today, between SA Health CHO and Police Commissioner who wanted the 4sq metre to relax to 2sq metre and which did happen. I think middle ground has been achieved.

Still, after all the snaffus and incorrect conclusions and actions that SA people have made in recent weeks we must be careful not to jump to conclusions.
