Rex to fly between Australian capital cities

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It is a PR DREAM for REX though when they launch against VA2/Bain next year though!

It would simply be petty, and the sort of thing that would likely backfire.

And unless Brett had a middle name that started with Z, surely it's a stretch anyway.

If they keep their $299 fares for off-peak travel that would be perfect! I'd be happy to pay that.

Noticed they're also selling fares on connecting routes as well, but perhaps could be missing something by not being able to combine 737 business with Saab economy.

I haven't checked if they're offering all routes but examples of potential connections that competitors don't offer include - SYD-MGB/KNS/BWT and MEL-PKE/LSY/GFF/NRA/BHS/MYA/OOM

Wish REX all the best with their new foray into RPT jet services and might even try one out for fun.

I suspect their survival on the golden triangle pins largely on the reaction from Virgin 2 as they appear to be targeting the same part of the market.

Rex's cancellation and refund conditions seem much more generous, even for their lead-in business basic/saver fare. Hopefully this will being some competition to the fares market.

No reaction from Bain/VA2 yet...

Qantas reacts to new player on Sydney to Melbourne route

Qantas has responded after regional carrier REX launched $79 flights on Australia’s busiest route sparking a potential fare war.

Having a look at Rex's proposed SYD-MEL schedule. They will start in March with 3 Boeing 737-800s and plan to operate 9 return flights per day.

I just had a look at how the fleet utilisation would work. Each plane will fly 6 sectors per day, with 55-60 minute turnaround times between flights. Those turnaround times are better than the industry average, which will help the schedule to absorb delays during the day. But if one of those 3 jets goes out of service, the whole operation turns to chaos. These are relatively old 737s, so I'd say there's a reasonable chance this will happen.

So when Rex's Deputy Chairman tells the media that Rex is going to offer "superior reliability", I just don't see how this is backed up in fact.

I really hope that REX do their own thing and not engage in wars that send them to the wall.
Agreed. TBH I can't see this capital city thing being a success. There may be a model that in a COVID world, that works for Rex flying jets to some destinations but not sure with a 737. Good luck to them, but I fear they might need it.

Yes, both price and product wars.

I don't think it will be long before the bloggerati starts complaining about "how dated" the Rex lounges are, but keeping lounges up to date all the time just builds in cost, as do things like celebrity chefs etc. Hope Rex stay well grounded (as in the "well balanced and sensible" definition, not the "prohibited or prevented from flying" definition), as that could well be a strength for them.

Although I fear their position in the market has echoes of Compass Mk I.

To date, Rex's business model seems to be flying monopoly regional routes and bullying the airport operators at those airports into giving them what they want. This won't work on the domestic trunk routes.

I also don't understand how they plan to make a profit by, as they claim they will do, offering a premium full-service experience at Jetstar prices.

Either Rex or VA won't survive this. I suspect Rex will be the casualty.
