Rex to fly between Australian capital cities

REX to keep the 8 business seats on the 737s they are receiving from VA's 737 lessors. They are undecided at this stage whether to sell them as "Business" or as "Economy Plus".

I would assume REX would just replace the Virgin branded upholstery on the Business seats.

REX's positioning is almost identical to VA2's new 'value' positioning. And now they are using their planes as well. Talk about ballsy going after a wounded VA2 with their own planes....

Who would have picked this a year ago?! Crazy times.

Sounds promising! I just want the extra space, so as long as it is competitively priced, I'll be a customer!
 
And Jetstar are adding routes.Tying up Tasmania with direct flights to BNE,ADL,OOL etc.Even LST to BNE.

That's what I meant. I think people are still in dreamland when they talk about competitive pricing, and the various other facets of a healthy market. There might be some level of pent up demand, but that will exhaust itself quickly enough. My guess is that the entire market will be a fraction of what it once was. Airlines that are saddled with debt in an attempt to survive the virus will ultimately fail. A small start up, with no debt, and standing on the bones of those who came before will be all that's needed.

The airports will be then next casualties.

Especially in cases where we have a distorted market through passenger money tied up in vouchers or credits... very little incentive to discount when you have a captive market. Example: return fares to London from Melbourne for 7-21 August 2021... Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay plus others $1430-$1500. Qantas $2176. Business class on Cathay, Swiss, British Airways, Japan Airlines $6200-$6400. Qantas $10700 (note... first class on SQ and Swiss is the same price!)
 
I'm sorry, I didn't realise that I was meant to be rubbishing QF. Anyway, I think your prices are irrelevant. Not only won't flights be happening to Europe on any of those airlines, but QF won't be a survivor of this.

It’s not a case of disparaging QF, it’s an example of showing what can happen in a market where there is no competition because money is tied up in vouchers that can’t be transferred. European airlines and alliances are heavily discounting fares in the mid to late months of 2021 locally, transatlantic and to and from Asia/Australia. We’re not seeing the same from our airlines.

I agree - because QF, VA2 can't fly anywhere! Some people are not quite connecting the dots....

Can't fly internationally profitably due to the caps and can't fly domestically profitably because of the state border restrictions. Period.
 
REX's shareholders (predominatly the Singaporean owners) must be taking a gamble on Bain screwing up on Virgin Australia badly considering VA has little to no unencumbered assets.

Per the ET speculation piece, REX are eyeing ambitious plans of expanding up to 40 737s..

Well roughly that would mean Bain/VA2 building to a domestic only airline about 50/60% of its former self and Rex filling the gap.... I’m sure they are going to go hard after all VA1’s old customers but still that’s a big call Rexy!

But if the total market remains at a fraction of what it was previously, then it’s a much small pie to be carved up. Personally, I won’t be falling over myself to get on any aircraft with more than one seat.

So the new world according to Rex in terms of service levels in AU:

1) Qantas
2) REX
3) Bain/VA2
4) Jetstar

Wonder if Bain will be happy about them being relegated to 3rd ;)

Regional Express (Rex) is looking at kicking off with nine return jet services a day between Sydney and Melbourne at a price similar to Jetstar’s but service that is better than Virgin Australia’s.

The airline also revealed longer-term aspirations to expand its operations to all Australian capital cities should the launch of the Boeing 737 services go well.

He said pricing would be “around the Jetstar level” to target price-sensitive, discretionary travelers.

“However, our product offering will be superior to Virgin,’’ he said. “We wouldn’t be as ritzy as Qantas but all the basic elements would be there.

Rex has lounges in three capital cities which Lim said the airline would keep those facilities and could improve them.

Rex intends to start Boeing 737 jet services in early March with three former Virgin Australia aircraft flying between Sydney and Melbourne. It plans to grow its presence to start flying to Brisbane from Easter.

The first of six 737-800s touched down in Sydney on November 5 and will be used for training ahead of proving flight for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority in December.

“As we bring in more aircraft we will go to all the capital cities and major cities in Australia,” he said.

Was trying to think of a comparison of the sort of brand that Rex is like. In banking I'd say Bendigo Bank, in supermarkets, IGA. Not sure about other industries.
