We had a months holiday booked for Bali in May. We rebooked for November, thats not happening either.

So we booked and paid for 2 lots of accomodation in Queensland, we were going to do a road trip from Sydney and look at places to retire to.

One venue wanted us to pay in full, with a cancellation possibility, so we paid out the $1k for 7 nights.
The other venue wanted a one night deposit for our 14 night stay, with a cancellation possibility.
When i cancelled that one this week, as it needed to be cancelled by tomorrow, they wanted to hit me with a $55 fee to transfer the funds back to my account. Our other option was to take a credit for 1 night to be used at some stage in the future. That was the option I took.

So we have 4 weeks holiday starting in 2 weeks time, does not look like we are going to get to Queensland so we will spend out $$ in NSW - maybe we will find a retirement spot during this time.

Meanwhile we are waiting for repayment of our Bali holiday, $7K with $1500 remaining as a credit for accomodation in Bali, we have a one nights credit in QLD and goodness knows what happens to the 1K we have not cancelled yet. Garuda are going to take $150 USD off each of our business class tickets as we asked for a refund.

The only winner here is airlines and venue’s holding onto fees, after this crisis they will never be used by us again.

these type of actions are not going to bode well for future business growth

While I take your point the poor business operators are losing money hand over fist. A small fee for a refund is a minor inconvenience. Get your money out otherwise the provider may collapse into administration like VA.
With borders the way they are, book local or fully flexible/refundable are the only wise options.
 
A small fee as you call it is 50% of the booking for the accomodation. Covid is not my fault, nor is it the fault of the service providers.

To be fair your post had a number of different charges and refunds/credits. My point being $55 or $170 from a Business fare is not extortion. I agree 50% is unreasonable but if you booked after March it wouldn’t be a zero risk and unfortunately many of us just had to take what we can get as refunds.
Most providers have been good not all though.

I have paid cancellation fees for J tickets and always check that. $150 strikes me as at the low end. Finnair, I think it was, hit me for $600 but that sort of canx fee tends to go with a cheap fare. As for airlines, they (and their creditors where insolvent) are without a doubt the biggest losers. I'd be most interested in how long it takes to get a refund.

Announcement from Tasmanian Premier Gutwein. I can only find it on the local paywalled Mercury, but its finally some relaxation on entertainment & sporting assemblies, over 3 stages. Hope for the Sydney-Hobart finish, various sporting events and of course live music etc.

Stage 3 (final) is:

Free moving outdoor events can have up to 5000 people
Free moving indoor events can have up to 1000 people
Seated outdoor events at 50% capacity can have up to 10,000 people
Seated indoor events at 50% capacity can have up to 2000 people
Events with multiple separate areas or sites can have up to 10,000 people in total

I still think its too slow, and numbers too low, but there you go. If there's an outbreak, I'll eat a suitable amount of crow. Social distancing, collection of contact details at restaurants and other sit-down venues is pretty patchy these days.

New Zealanders transiting in (or direct) no longer need to quarantine as of Monday, same as arrivals from NT, WA, QLD, SA, ACT.

NSW arrivals can quarantine at private homes from Monday, maybe no quarantine from 2 November.

If the flight was operating and I cancelled I fully accept their right to charge me the cancellation fee as per the fare conditions. I booked and paid for that Garuda fair in November 2019 for carriage in May of 2020.

That is why I believe the airline should refund the entire amount.

I am so happy that members of this forum have so much money you can afford to give fees away to airlines when the airline has not met their part of the contract !!!

Reading that article I'm confused as it states "WA Premier Mark McGowan said "low risk" was fewer than five community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average. " NSW has met that bar already, and Vic is pretty close.

But then later it states the When those states reach 28 days of no local cases or are deemed "very low risk" by the Chief Health Officer they will move into the no-quarantine category. "

So in WA what is the difference between a community case and a local case?

'Local case' appears to be a slip of the pen or mouth in this case. The "official" releases only talk about "community cases".
 
Looking at the various items that Gladys has said are requirements before she will open the NSW border, I was intrigued to find that one of them is the reopening of Melbourne International. Now you really have to wonder why that would be....

From the Victorian side, I guess Dan can say that he won't be allowing reopening until the NSW border opens. Perfect catch-22. And they'll be able to blame each other.
 
The requirements are about proving Vic Govt can manage Covid-Normal, so removing ring of steel to enable Victorians free movement within their own state, having QR codes for tracking venue attendance (as stated previously Vic could have easily put this in place during lockdown to be ready to reopen) and reopening MEL to international arrivals to prove they have addressed the hotel Qarantine issues. 2 weeks with these in place and no serious spread and NSW open to all of Vic.

Low case levels without freedom of movement or international arrivals means improvements havenot yet been pressure tested.

Positive caases in hotel quarantine have been growing as situations internationally worsen, it key confidence to manage is restored, as NSW is now having to augment the number of medically managed vs supervised quarantine hotels due to this growth in cases.NSW took lions share of vic arrivals for last 4 months, Vic needs to now resume arrivals given their medical facilities now have capacity.

We only have 2 ‘community’ aka unknown cases for the last 14 days.

Looking for evidence of WA s definition, it it was mystery cases then NSW would be allowed in, as we have never averaged more than 5 mystery cases per day over any 14 day period. That article makes i look more like WA consider community cases any case outside of hotel quarantine irrespective of whether linked to a known source.
