Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

We actually don’t know if his suspension of international travel is lawful... no one seems interested to contest it yet.

Dunno if states can be discriminated against... you’d have to look at the constitution.
That applies internally as well and McGowan has put his foot in it royally today with a full scale breach of S92.

I’ll leave that for another board.

While the pros and cons of state border closures is a topic for the other thread... the issue of the international travel ban is probably relevant here.

The two are somewhat different. States have closed their borders before and there is an established basis for it. The international travel ban I think may be unprecedented, at least in modern times. That's something untested and far more shaky.

I’d love WA or Qld to take a crack at it.

All this time the Federal Government has been limiting arrival numbers. Different numbers for different airports/States. So it’s no different to keeping a certain number (ie zero) for certain States/airports. Simples.

PS And add to that I don’t even know if there has been a law to enforce bring in the current arrival limits, so what law are you going to say is Unconstitutional

But you have been arguing that State governments closing borders is legal because of the pandemic.Yet the incidence of Covid infections in North and South America,Europe, the Middle East and Africa are way higher than any Australian State even Victoria.
And the PMs announcement is not limiting interstate travel which is in the Constitution.

There's a ban on international travel - we can't leave! That may be in contravention of obligations under the covenant on civil and political rights.

There's an article explaining the ins and outs here: Is Australia’s travel ban a breach of international human rights law?

The numbers agree, too.

# cases / 100,000 over a 14 day period

Ok, got it. So if we excluded most of Australia , and just looked at the worst part, Victoria, the comparable figures (admittedly apples vs oranges) would still start at 9.5 on 17.09 and reduce to 3.4 on 30.09

So extremely low then!

It's two different scenarios.

Laws have to be, well, 'lawful'. There is a legal basis for states closing their borders. The Cth banning international travel may not be on the same legal footing.

The Cth might have a grounds to limit arrivals, but banning us from leaving is a big issue for me.

But the State border closures have not yet been declared legal.Although closing them for a pandemic may be legal it depends on the risk. That has not been ruled on.And remember most of the CMOs/CHOs around the countrty don't believe State borders needed to be shut. The Commonwealth CMO and deputies are definitely the most credentialled in the fields of epidemiologu and virology.

Whereas they all agreed with the closure of the National border.I do agree people should be allowed to leave but definitely have to quarantine on returning from places with high Covid numbers.

However there are signs that soon we may be allowed to travel to places with low numbers.

LOL WA or QLD will the the last states to try and fight for international borders to be open.

None of the quote ‘untested and untried’ states would be game. They can’t even risk opening to Australian states. Will never happen.

A private individual/s who cares enough will have to take it on.

NZ travel bubble set to be announced within days

Scott Morrison is set to announce deals with NSW and South Australia to kickstart the trans-Tasman travel bubble within days, which would see the hotel quarantine requirement scrapped for New Zealand arrivals.

Government sources told The Australian that the announcement is expected before Tuesday’s federal budget, with the PM and his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern discussing plans earlier this week.

The Federal Government will first need to reach agreements with each state about how the travel bubble will work, with Sydney and Adelaide set to be the first cabs off the rank in welcoming arrivals.

“I can’t tell you Australians will be able to holiday in New Zealand, but that’s their problem. I’m happy for Kiwi tourists to come here and spend money in NSW and South Australia. They’re very, very welcome.”

Meanwhile, Mark McGowan didn’t mince his words over Western Australia’s hard border stance, telling reporters there’s “no benefit” in reopening to the nation’s other states.

“All we’ll do is lose jobs were we to open to those (jurisdictions),” he said, which led to intense criticism from WA business groups and the state opposition that he was not following health advice regarding border restrictions.

Except this is not a bubble. It is just a relaxation of quarantine requirements on entry to Australia. !

But like good quality media (haha) the world over let's not the facts get in the way of an agenda.

Singapore reopens to Australian tourists

Singapore will allow Australians to holiday and visit the popular city-state from next week but, the announcement comes with a catch, holiday-makers will also have to fork out an extra $3000 for their two week hotel quarantine upon re-entry to Australia.

Singapore’s transport Minister Ong Ye Kung announced the exciting development on Facebook, describing the move as a way to “resuscitate Changi Airport”.

Anyone arriving into Changi Airport must complete a coronavirus test on arrival and download Singapore’s contact tracing app TraceTogether.

Visitors are encouraged to pay for the coronavirus test before arrival, which costs $S300 ($A306).

Addressing the development on social media, Mr Ye Kung praised Vietnam and Australia.

“Like Brunei and New Zealand, Vietnam and Australia have also very successfully controlled the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” he said.

Gee, I must have lead a sheltered life! I don’t know anyone who’s been in the slammer!
As you say that you know (of)...

Not many new arrivals into a neighbourhood volunteer their criminal history (or lack thereof) for some reason.

Amazingly high proportion of CVs never include their jail time! Most HR depts do not check for a criminal record either just rely on people to be honest.

Case in point - airport baggage handlers, cleaning staff & catering staff - for some employers the proportion was >50% of 'unknown' convictions that should have made them inelligible. Honest mistake though.

A bit like the Irishman reported in the news over the last two days who punched & killed a man in Ireland, sentenced to 7 years for it & duly arrived into Australia after signing declaration including - 'No criminal convictions'. Post arriving in Australia he is alledged to have been in a one-punch attack & in a group attack & knifing of a 67yr old man. Arrested in Western Sydney in the last couple of days at his new lawyer's office.
