All international travelers will be quarantined in hotels or designated facilities

Anecdotally I have heard of a person returning from a posting in the UK(?) who has been given permission to fly into Sydney with the family and drive through to CBR and quarantine at home. My source is pretty reliable usually.
And anecdotally, can you see a reason why this person might be given such consent?

Is that a Defence or Diplomatic person @love_the_life - because I think both of those categories are exempt from the usual requirements.

And there was the infamous case of the DFAT contractor who flew into SYD, got permission to fly direct to MCY and then drove another 230k to Toowoomba, and then tested positive. After that I thought the rules were tightened?
cheers skip

Perhaps the rules were tightened for people transiting with a final destination of Qld

Pretty sure they were but I thought the issue got a run at National Cabinet. In that case the 🦹‍♀️ villain proclaimed by Qld was DFAT. Blame can usually be found elsewhere.

I am rather bemused at some of the issues surrounding quarantine, and would be interested to see what other members think. There are thousands of stranded Aussies overseas who are unable to return home because of the caps on entry to Australia, often through no fault of their own. The Government is doing nothing to organise repatriation flights, and many people are struggling to survive, let alone breaking limits on their visas.

The Australian cricket team flew to London on a chartered jet, and reports say that they will soon be allowed to return to Adelaide and quarantine. The Australian tennis players at the US Open are in the same position. My question is to why sportspeople are apparently allowed to "jump the line" over others who have waited for many months to get home? And SA want to trial bringing international students here, again ahead of Aussies. Is this really fair?

Money talks.

There is a whole thread devoted to exactly this issue @willclan. You ask a very sound question and point to the inequality in the whole travel ban/border closure situation as it is applied in practice.

Edited to add thread link

I am overseas back to home to base for summer and travel to compete in Europe. I am a professional sportsperson. No special treatment here except I guess that I spend more time overseas lets me leave Aus without any question by ABF.

Can not get back to Aus. Had 3 flights cancelled so far. 2 premium economy and 1 economy. Will keep trying, need to come back at least one more time then will be back over here for next summer.

Europe is doing great. You are free as a bird. Covid was the last straw with Australia for me unfortunately.

Europe is not doing great, have you seen the numbers lately?

I know a few French hospitals are overwhelmed, maybe they have an older population, but surely now we need to move from numbers to hospitalisations to better assess what is happening?

Friend's daughter arrived home from UK last night on Emirates - had 2 flights cancelled and one other option off the table (to fly in with the Spring Carnival race horses). In the end the company paid First to get her back and it was at quite short notice. She'd been working in the UK for them since just before the pandemic hit. Now in quarantine in Sydney.

While I don't disagree with that, in reality a high number of cases still means there is a risk to the greater population as that can easily spread to the elderly, etc.

Good to see that not only can Lord Sugar get on a flight easily, but he also gets to skirt hotel quarantine as have many other celebs.

Really bloody frustrating.

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just watched the late news, 30,000 Australians registered to come home, 4,000 deemed extremely vulnerable and estimated another 70,000 would come home if were able to.

And we pathetically increase quarantine by a few hundred. It’s a national disgrace.

Sorry I have not read the whole thread, don't know whether it has been discussed.
All overseas arrivals need to be quarantined in hotels, yet positive cases are allowed to isolate at home.
Anyone feel there is a major inconsistency here?

It has been raised before.

Some jurisdictions in Australia have proposed laws that would allow detention of positive individuals who refuse to isolate at home, or are incapable of doing so and are deemed a threat to the welfare of the community. However, those proposals have come under fire both from elements of the press who typically aren't human rights champions, as well as the more traditional champions of human rights.
