Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

This is concerning, the SMH reports:

* an emergency doctor, aged in his 30s, who is believed to have caught the virus while working in a Northern Health COVID-19 screening clinic is now in ICU as a patient;
* a GP is in his 30s, contracted the virus at a screening clinic and has been intubated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
* a 53-year-old personal care worker from St Basils in Fawkner is in the ICU at the Austin Hospital

Unfortunately one of the biggest risk factors & curiously enough not publicised - is being more than around 10% over-weight. Given Australia regularly ranks 1st or 2nd in the obesity stakes (swapping with the US) - that you would think would see the Govt publicise & encourage people to use their 'enforced' free time to perhaps make a life-saving effort at losing a kg or two.

A very high proportion of the early deaths in NY of under 60s were more than 10% over-weight. Once ICUs got over capacity the mortality rates spiked and the data became more driven by whether someone arrived as someone else died & got swapped onto the rapidly cleaned machines.

Over 85% of medical staff who died in the first weeks at two NY hospitals were >10% over-weight. There was one 'cause celebre' family which lost 5 family members early on, another died shortly after this NY article on March 18th when the US was relatively CV free. At the time the first family member apparently caught it the total number of +ve CV cases in all NY was under 150:

Coronavirus Ravages 7 Members of a Single Family, Killing 4 ...

Mar 18, 2020 - The matriarch of the large New Jersey family died Wednesday night ... after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughter's death, a relative said. ... New Jersey, which had made great strides against the virus, sees a ... and at least 172 have died, according to a New York Times database.

Reports how some of the family survivors lost over 20kgs while in ICU.

Early on there was some reports about the link between obesity & mortality but after Cuomo ordered CV+ patients discharged from hospitals into NY nursing homes - the spiralling death toll of the aged took over the headlines. There were a number of theories put forward but no research has appeared to have followed.

One was that the higher proportion of fat stored within the body 'powered' the CV virus replication compared with people with much lower body energy stores. As loss of appetite (loss of taste & smell etc) saw all reduce intake & then if admitted into hospital calorific intake specifically set - then excess energy available to CV is cut....

Another posited was that the body (closed system) is already under stress from dealing with the excess weight & has less 'ability' to switch its focus onto the new adversary. This coupled with for many (not all) >10% overweight people generally exercise less etc - so their lung capacity etc is already retarded.

Who knows why being significantly over-weight is so adverse - but it just seems to be the way.

sA’s case today is a paramedic who went to Melb to help swabbing towers...seems like in self- isolation, now close contact Isolating. ❤

Vic Police won’t be following up potential health risks.....So hopefully any leads they have are passed to Vic health
I was suggesting that Vic Police may have interest in following up regarding alleged organised crime gangs stealing high-end products from Melbourne stores. They may find that more interesting than following up health issues which would be the domain of Vic Health.

Anti-maskers fined after Melbourne protest

Police in Melbourne have arrested two people and fined 18 people at a protest against face masks at the Shrine of Remembrance earlier today.

Police said they directed the protesters to leave the area or receive an infringement notice for breaching the Chief Health Officer's directives.

They were all fined $1,652.

"We will continue to investigate the event in order to identify individuals who were in attendance, and plan to issue them with fines for breaching the Chief Health Officer's directions," police said in a statement.

BREAKING: NT records one new case

The Northern Territory has recorded another positive case of COVID-19.

NT health authorities say an adult male found out he had tested positive while he was flying on a plane from Melbourne to Darwin today.

He is now in isolation at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Authorities say he is asymptomatic and had travelled to Melbourne to receive essential medical treatment and was due to quarantine with his family upon his return to Darwin.

Health authorities say he was wearing PPE on the plane and contact tracing is underway.

Everyone who travels to the NT from coronavirus hotspot areas, including Melbourne, has to complete 14 days of supervised quarantine, at their own cost.

Sounds like he would have received an exemption.

One of the earlier reports did mention that Vic Police were investigating the crime aspects of this matter.

Yes I mean how dare everyone, I mean shoplifting is such an honourable profession. Obviously the flights were just essential travel, and not mentioning Victoria just an oversight that anyone could make.....
Well there is an exemption for work that can't be done at home, so that makes it OK (removes tongue from cheek).

There’s certainly something a bit strange about those photos. The images may have been doctored.

The photos were taken from the girls' Facebook pages. When I first saw the pics, I thought they were drag queens!

THe legal fees should be higher than the quarantine charge.....yikes

Without expressing any sympathy for this position, more talking about motivations as an intellectual issue, the transfer of the cost of quarantine to individuals is likely to drive more of this type of behaviour which might be aimed at avoiding a heavy personal cost. Asking individuals to pay for quarantine costs individually/personally for what is really a public benefit (keeping COVID out of the community) is the effect of this recent change and many people will just not think that's a good use of their money.
And it's not even the case always (although it might well have been for the Qld 2) that people knew what they were in for when they left home. The way borders have slammed shut, new hot spots have been added etc with very little notice, it is entirely possible that people planned their travel according to the rules at the time and then found themselves caught out by short notice changes. If you had a couple of families or groups of friends travelling, the financial incentive (for those inclined not to respect others or the rules, no matter what the personal cost) to take steps to avoid quarantine is pretty strong. Further, people trying to do the right thing and get home before border closures (both internationally and now domestically) have been hit with massive costs for expensive flights. Just remember it was only a couple of weeks back that we were all being encouraged to holiday at home...
I don't have the answers, just questions and random thoughts, but it seems to me that it is never a good idea to "punish" people financially when you want them to do something that has more benefit for the community than for them personally. YMMV.

They are normal looking African young women who have received rape and death threats and have been told they should be summarily executed. The African community is now taking the brunt of the backlash and as usual it will be the women who come off worse.
None of this this condemnation will make others from marginalised communities feel safe in coming forward for testing.
Let’s stop making fun of the way these women look, it’s cheap shots.

Due process is a right.

Sorry but it was not meant as a cheap shot. do you suggest that drag queens have a different value to other people?

Should have gone to Specspavers. 😉

QLD authorities have made it clear how reckless the behaviour was, along with lying and duplicity, and endangering the lives of others.

Yes, the courts will sort out criminal behaviour in the fullness of time.

Pending moderation, we are all free to express opinions on this forum. And we accept that there will be differing views.

And not surprisingly, they are probably seen as a disgrace to their community. I sympathise with their families for what they have put them through, but not with the girls, due to their behaviour.

Well I have been saying that because of this virus, there should be better terms and conditions on a range of tourism products (And probably extends to a range of contracts)....so that people can change to meet the changing State border/health requirements.

Eg Qantas’ free one time change is now ridiculous......not fair in this environment.

When Stage 4 or 5 kicks in Melbourne, more people will be exposed on current long-term contracts.

Victorian Premier noted they would be looking carefully at the data, and CHO mentioned they would be doing a deep dive. Interesting that 17% of new cases (101) today were in one LGA - Wyndham, and almost 35% (201) in three LGA's - Wyndham, Hume and Whittlesea. But on the flipside, almost 2/3 cases were outside these hotspots.
