I've noticed a couple of examples of qantas economising that I thought were counter-productive.

1. Not bothering to issue the current inflight magazine and inflight entertainment on BNE-SNG flights in December. This occurred on several flights and on each occasion passengers were told "the aircraft is about to go out of service." And no, the crew couldn't advise PAX what was on the entertainment channels.

2. Issuing unlined 'sick-bags.' Maybe they've been doing this for years. I've never had to use one, but I do remember that in the days when the advertised film-processing, they were robust and had plastic(?) lining. Saw an unfortunate pax who needed one several times on a long haul flight and each time the paper bag burst giving the distressed pax and crew a significant cleaning job.

Are these common?
 
I don't think these issues are common. I cannot remember if I have been on a QF flight that did not have any inflight magazines.
 
I've noticed that the magazine is getting scarcer on flights, seems that non-replacement is across the board.

As another - have you noticed that spirits/mixed drinks are not available for purchase in domestic economy any more?

Why would that be an economy measure - I would have thought it would be a good earner ?

When I asked why they were no longer available was told that when it came down to the weight of carrying them versus the revenue from selling them, the weight argument won, and they are gone.

Obviously they just needed to display the spirits more conspicuously. Perhaps some posters on the trolleys also. Frequent announcements over the cabin PA could help as well. I must say as a shareholder I am disappointed !

At $6 or $7 for the spirits I would hazard a guess and say not many people would be buying them as most can have a drink before or after the flight espcially the short flights. No point in having the stock there if there is little demand.

I have seen people refuse to buy a beer after asking if it was complimentary on my weekend flights.

I wouldn't and I didn't. Just observed that they were gone from the introductory spiel where they used to say they were available for purchase and asked why. Don't know how long they've been gone but I would agree probably not a big seller.
