Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

What was the '77 Grange like? It's my birth year (see @JohnM, not a millennial!) but noly heard bad things about the vintage. In fact pretty horrendous vintage world wide except for vintage port.

I had the 1976 a few years ago and it was wonderful. This 1977 not quite there, but hey it was still a nice wine and 40 odd years later still perfectly fine... It has port like characteristics on the after taste.

So yes, not the best year by Grange standards but still a very nice wine to consume IMO

Quite the contrast. '76 being an absolute classic of course.

Not knowing when in the year your birthday is, but if it’s between January and September, you could do what Halliday does. He uses the year of his conception because the year of his birth was a diabolically bad vintage whereas the previous year was a cracker. 😉

Great idea. In that case I'm a '76 baby. And no, my birthday is still to come. I await your generous gift 🤔

How was the Neb Daver6? Got a good rep.

Great question and spot on about the rep. A friend specifically brought it along as I wanted to try it. It was good but perhaps in a slightly awkward phase at the moment. It was somewhere between old and new world stylistically. We concluded it needed a bit more time in the bottle.

2015 merlot: all enjoyable, Merite perhaps slightly better than Highbank, both ahead of Coldstream Hills

Caillard mataro was great - at least as good as Woods Crampton

Aphelion grenache not quite up there with others recently such as Paralian and Bondar

A tasting that a friend and I put on over the weekend. Gembrook vertical, Balnaves vertical, 2017 Grampians Shiraz and 2010 European showcase.

Thoughts off the top of my head:
  • Gembrook was consistent, very hard to pick the vintage differences but the 15 was the best. Gembrook a supremely underrated winery IMO, these were all great, textural, savoury pinots. I think the next step up for this style of Aussie pinot comes +$200 upwards with Bass Phillip.

of those that I've tasted, including those three, 2015 Gembrook has probably been the best, one of the few 2015 Yarra pinots that I've preferred over their 2017 counterparts, and perhaps my favourite of that vintage

From last night,

The sorrenberg is really getting me to drink whites more often, this is fresh juicy clean fruit , great fragrances but not too strong, hint of sweetness ,green melons, flavour is so rich and smooth, none of that grassy herby kind of thing in this wine, worth cellaring for.

Dr edge south 2019, another bargain, this is intense , not as easy going as the sorrenberg, less oak and less time in oak, pineapple on the nose, toasty nutty flavour , it’s dry ,might be the tannins ,needs more time to open up than the sorrenberg.

how does that Dr.Edge South compare with other Tasmanian chardonnays that you've had?

It really was something special, I revisited at the end of the tasting and it had only blossomed further, only one bottle left which I think will be saved for a more comprehensive Gembrook vertical in a few years.

I really like them when they first released , don’t know why/how they went down hill for the past few years.

The only other tassie chard. I’ve tried was the holyman, it’s a bit more spicy ,quality are very much the same ,the dr edge south needs more time to open up, I also tried the dr edge north and east at a dinner last month,it is very much like the sorrenberg at first, more fragrance and less tight to drink.

Back home and into the cellar.I still have a lot to drink so stick with the old favourites.

This one surprised me.Much better than expected.very good drinking so now I am happy I have 1 bottle left.

Oh hell I forgot about that - I paid $132/doz and got $50.15 rebate = $6.82/bott - I had that in my mind from the get go and forgot CR.
Yes, I got some too. It was a lovely wine, now on sale at double what I paid, but still a big discount.
