General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I was talking to my accountant yesterday and saying the USA seems to have so many idiots and I am sure Australians are more sensible. He said - no we have more than our share of idiots as well. Looks like he was right - what a selfish woman.
Thankfully the home grown idiots are more of a silent minority but it wont take much for a rent a crowd to find a cause to get behind.

I get it, people are suffering but the entire freaking world is suffering. Nothing makes us unique or special other than we can try to be smarter than the dumbest lot, which so far seems to be the USA.

When did those huge football crowds start to gather again?
Few masks and lots of expending air when. And of course the religious gatherings.

Medical advice has always prioritised social distancing over masks. As I understand it those gatherings still have to keep social distancing and for e.g. stadiums have to have ticketed seats and spacing. (Which is why they are only allowed 25% of capacity)

I wish people would get over the fear of being judged for wearing a mask. Wear the damned thing if you want, I encourage it. Ive always appreciated the asian culture in wearing them and they dont give two hoots about what others are thinking when wearing them.

Yes wearing a mask doesn't bother me.I had to wear one at all times when out of my apartment for the first 2 weeks hee in Tassie.Did get a couple of funny looks and some people avoided getting close but was not embarrassed at all.

I don’t have a problem with a mask - wore them when watering my garden when we had all the smoke, although I did get funny looks from neighbours.

I think the message in Australia has always been that social distancing is more important and I think they worry that people will regard masks as a panacea and they can then ignore the other guidelines. Mask + social distancing seems the ultimate. Or just huddling in my home as much as possible until the end of July and then reviewing it :)

I have to wear a mask in winter outside when the neighbours light their wood fire and there is a cold air inversion, which is a lot of the time. It's like being in bush fire smoke and catches the breathing. The wood is not plantation wood, it's some critter's food or home and most of it around here disappeared up in smoke already in summer.

The pressure is mounting in WA, particularly if they keep the border closed and we have no cases, for pubs and nightclubs to open in the traditional way.

The pressure is also mounting to open the border. I can't see how they can resist much longer without some sort of civil disobedience.

Mind you, there does seem to be an abject fear by many people that we must eliminate, not mitigate. I went out for dinner last Fiday night with a friend and met some work colleagues of hers for the first time. They were strongly in favour of keeping the border closed. I was surprised by the level of fear.

They were also teachers, so their pay keeps flowing as normal...

Whoops, it was time to bite my lip... 😜

I follow The Western Australian newspaper via facebook and so many people say keep the border shut, its ridiculous.

Planning a trip to WA in October so I hope the borders are open by then or Qantas and the new Virgin will never get going.

Just reading about a woman in the US - got the virus quite early on. Went into her ER was tested and came back positive and was treated. I gather she wasn’t particularly ill so was home quite quickly - Bill was US$34,000 and no insurance....

Yes the land of the free, is not so free, and not just in $ terms.

They also get to spend more time behind bars...

About 0.7% of the United States is currently in a federal or state prison or local jail.

Less than 5% of the world’s population is in the United States, but 20% of the world’s incarcerated people are there.
“What percent of the U.S. is incarcerated?” (And other ways to measure mass incarceration)

I'd say the chances of Marko coming to his senses and opening the WA border are now vanishing fast...:(

It will be interesting to see how the interplay between keeping WA closed and further reducing restrictions on social venues actually pans out. They are seemingly mutually exclusive, so relaxing the latter at the expense of relaxing the former could be the sop to reducing dissent. Pressure is growing from lobby groups and the Opposition is squealing.

Apparently this is being worked on over the weekend.

The infection amongst the security personnel is extremely frustrating for them. And for the rest of Australia. I ignore newly arrived travellers.
I do too but the other states are effectively 0 if you ignore hotel quarantine. Vic had 15 and 12 new cases, in the last two days, after excluding hotel cases. The security guards apparently weren’t sticking to guidelines.

Im not sure. The fact that WA now has the highest unemployment rate must have come as a shock.
