Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Personally I think the days of requiring daily press conferences has now past.

Yes still issue a daily press release, but the press conference should now only really be held when there is something significant to be announced or reported on.

Well at least Tasmania does let someone see a dying relative although the occasional glitch. Not much mercy in QLD though.

As well the Rockhampton nurse is really getting thrown under the bus.She has been suspended and referred to the Crime and Corruption Commission. Then she was mentioned as a possible cause of the Blackwater case but they have walked back that allegation and now QLD Health are suggesting a FIFO worker brought the virus to town.
But today I received a rumour that is doing the rounds in Rockhampton via a locum there. The nurse supposedly is claiming she told her boss about the symptoms and that she had had a test but was told to come to work anyway and work on the switchboard so no contact with residents. If true Annastacia will have to do some quick backtracking as the seat of Rockhampton and it's neighbour Keppel are 2 of the ALPs marginal seats. They won both in 2017 as they got LNP preferences so edged in front of One Nation.

That makes the three states with borders having some off days this week. SA Health officer claimed that Vic Health didn't notify SA of when that woman was flying in. It has been been shown they did. WA - similar issue with regards to the ship. Now Qld has some apologies to make.

5 in one household dominating today's tests., and evidently the household is a large one with other members showing symptoms who have now also been tested and are expected to generate some more positives over the next few days.

Didn't intend to 'like' this bit 🙂 .

Kill the daily briefings & publish daily counts; remove the vehicle for grandstanding and less accusations resulting in less apologies and embarrassment.

No-one but no-one holds a daily press conference to tell us how many people died yesterday from the flu, cancer, heart attacks or anything else let alone one from 6 states, 2 territories and the feds.

What's not to like about that?

Publish a readily accessible defined list of what they intend to do and when to get us back into normality and be done with it. Tell us if they need to change course because of a REAL problem.

One person crossing a border who didn't infect anyone is not a problem we need a press conference for, sort it out under the covers.

Tas daily briefings stopped last week and the briefings that now happen cover 'recovery' issues.

Tomorrow the Premier is going to announce a big capital works spending spree. I expect there will be a press briefing 🙂

They have quarantined 19 people because of contact with her so that means another 10 days before we know we are in the clear. Plus those people on the plane didn't know until the next day.

I think the point was that not that it was not a problem. Just that it did not need a press conference on it.

Even when it's the restrictive border state messing up the process. Prof Spurrier has done well except for this issue and quite clearly has not been the least bit open about the circumstances from the beginning when the inference was this lady had only just left Victoria. Every day the story gets more complex.

Everyday the story gets more boring, idiot bureaucrats squabbling like geese over things that don't matter.

Yes second recent apology following on from the WA Premier launching into the Feds.

I know Vic is still bubbling along which is frustrating to everyone in Australia , but they are still doing a huge amount of testing. ie Within the last week the number of tests done in that small period exceeds all the tests that either WA, or SA have done in total. Take off the returning travellers and it is now about 0.03% or so of tests now that find a fresh case.

So by the 'rules' all the other premiers are setting, they would prefer proactive testing states like VIC to not test as many people so they can sleep better at night? The virus is everywhere, they need to get over this.

Good luck getting anything that isn't nonsensical out of our QLD premier and her ragtag team of advisors, sorry!

That is exactly right!

I thought the point was that the comment said they didn't infect anyone. We don't know that yet.

If she called herself Dominic coughmings I'm sure she would have been able to visit.

Even when it's the restrictive border state messing up the process. The lady was tested twice, as you say. All of which just proves the virus takes some time to incubate after contact. She must have had contact just before she departed UK, potentially even on the flight. And of course she has not had a meeting with her father who is expected not to survive.

Prof Spurrier has done well except for this issue and quite clearly has not been the least bit open about the circumstances from the beginning when the inference was this lady had only just left Victoria. Every day the story gets more complex.
Actually when tested in Victoria another possibility is that the Victorian test may have been a false negative.
Though seeing she was only in quarantine 7 days testing positive on day 8 is quite consistent with the accepted incubation period.

I heard tonight with regards to the sad death of the 30 year old that a second test was negative.

On Thursday, the day after Turner’s death was made public, Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young rejected suggestions Turner did not actually have the disease.

Asked if the test could have been a “false positive”, Young said “I don’t believe so”.

“There was a test done ... which is a very sensitive test and it came back positive,” Young said.

“I believe it was a positive.”

She said a second test which was inconclusive “wasn’t an effective test”.

Said nurse doesn't seem that trustworthy.

They were investigating her as the Blackwater link as she went on a 400km road trip out that way during lockdown when we couldn't travel in qld (while positive) to "watch a sunset" and apparently didn't get our of her car.

Covid-19 Weekly Surveillance in NSW

This is an interesting report. Has some detail on Covid-19 in kids NSW.
Rates of infection are 10 times higher in adults and there has only been one documented case of household transmission of child to adult, a 17 year old to their father.

‘No longer exists’: Doctor’s startling COVID-19 claim — 7NEWS.com.au

Very much a tabloid new article... but it’s probably true that the virus is morphing a bit and could explain why the strain in australia has been less severe.

Is the virus less deadly, or is just that less of the vulnerable (as well as the population at large) are being exposed to Covid 19 now in some regions? Other regions like Brazil the death toll has been increasing.

On average about 100 Italians per day are still dying from Covid 19. But the average Italian is now more aware of Covid 19 and even though restrictions have eased they are still practising things that help to minimise spread. Restrictions have eased as long as they follow social distancing measures and other basic safety rules such as wearing face masks on public transport and in closed public spaces. Some fear that the restrictions have been eased too quickly and time will tell.

In Australia it never became widespread and it was largely kept away from the the vunerable. But when the vulnerable were exposed it was deadly: ie Ruby Princess, Newmarket, NW cluster in Tasmania.

Those exposed on cruise ships if in the main risk groups have often had severe outcomes. On the Greg Mortimer were most were infected, but where they were a fit and healthy cohort the outcomes were aminly not severe.

The origin of the virus can be tracked by full genome sequences and this can pinpoint the origin of the virus. Here is an example from Israel.

From this they could deduce there had been multiple introductions of Covid into Israel. Those of US origin appeared to be more infective.
Then there is this site which tracks all mutatations. And there are a lot.

A very busy picture but the thick grey line furthest to the left they say with 100% confidence arose in Asia and is the original Wuhan virus.
The thick brown line is the strain that originated in the UK and the origin of other European variants.
To get the interaction for identifying this is the web page.

The picture for North America is more confusing as you have to know the variation as they don't hilight the origins of the particular virus on this picture. But the interesting part is the Eastern USA is predominantly the strains of European origin whereas in the west it is predominantly the Wuhan virus. They have shown at least 75%of cases in the USA came from NYC.
1591001843437.png.

It is also thought that the European variants had higher viral replication rates and patients with this variant spread the infection more rapidlyIn the Israeli report cases from the USA spread the infection up to 80 times the rate of others. For a couple of reasons I assume most from the USA were from the Eastern states.

In Australia the original cases were the Wuhan virus but as more cases came in from Europe and USA the European variant became more prevalent.Fortunately by then Quarantine, testing and contact tracing had been ramped up.So we were lucky because we could close our International border, the original variant was less virulent and we had our act basically in place by the time the more virulent variant arrived.
I have searched but nothing I can find suggests which clusters were caused by which variant.Although the NWRH cluster first began with a Ruby Princess case there were Americans and europeans aboard who possibly could have introduced their variant.

So it seems like the 30 year old from Queensland didn't contract Covid after all.

Only five cases Australia wide not linked with Quarantine and overseas travel and only 1 person requiring to be on a ventilator.
