General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I read somewhere today about the study of about 150 Chinese who had had the virus and were tested for antibodies. Apparently the result was very disappointing because a number of them had very low Ab results and some had no antibodies.

Yes. This seems to be a problem with the new rapid tests that are appearing. The antibody count is too low in some Ir many cases to be reliably detected by the test.

I thought only West Australians were held on Rottnest and 'foreigners' (i.e. non-WA) were held in Perth hotels.

Yes. That’s correct.

Interstaters were at Crown Metropol & Crown Promenade or The Duxton or one other place...

Ok we have quite a few folks due to come out of Rottnest isolation and now there are difficulties getting these people out of WA to their homes in other States. Not sure how this will get fixed as WA has closed its borders.

Think they were caught out by Qantas and Virgin slashing their operations into WA. Qantas still have a smattering of flights, but I guess you'll need to get in line

No I checked and those on Rottnest are from all over Australia.
We also have plane loads in hotels too.
I doubt WA Government will want to cover any costs over the 14 days from what the Premier has said.

Wondering if you know how many of the travellers isolated on Rottnest have produced symptoms?

So now it seems that the New South Wales Minister for the arts who was sacked and then find $1000 was actually following the rules for New South Wales which specifically say you are able to move between residencies. So it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

8. Moving to a new place of residence (including a business moving to new premises) or between different places of residence of the person or inspecting a potential new place of residence.

You are discussing the NSW Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin, I assume? He was issued a $1000 fine after community pressure. I don't live in NSW but media suggests the messages up there were unambiguous. so if true, it's poor he did that. Once the 'big' people ignore these rules, the 'little' people ask 'why should we observe these restrictions?'

In Victoria, the Premier Daniel Andrews has given confusing messages re travelling to holiday homes, which he's said was 'OK' at least a couple of times, but his Chief Health Officer has said 'essential travel only' or that's what the rules imply. So my neighbours and many others have gone to Lorne, Phillip Island and so on to find "the locals" don't want them there.

You're probably correct about 'hospital cost shifting' onto the Commonwealth, a practice that's been occurring for years. In Victoria, public hospitals have staff who go round enquiring of patients 'do you have private health cover?' so that the funds then have to pay the daily costs not the State Govt.

What are the police expected to do when someone is out and about after midnight washing his car in a public place.
Simply pass on by. Solitary person washing car. No risk of spreading a virus, otherwise it's a perfectly legal activity. Why engage?

Ah, the coronavirus travel challenge!
There’s flights on the 24th. Unless they get cancelled.
Earlier, there is a flight to BME at 05.10 on the 16th, that connects with. greyhound bus at 6 am on the 17th arriving in DRW at 09.00 on the 18th. Each about $300. Then there is a QF flight on the 20th from DRW to TSV and BNE, $960 odd. Bargain!

You could do similar a few days earlier to get to SYD. Although I suspect this is all theoretical, there is NT quarantine to deal with

Cheers skip

As far as I am aware - none. They have all now been released from isolation. It appears that the Captain of the Vasco de Gama was telling the truth about no cases on board when it arrived. It had been out from its last port for over 14 days..

Cove - I was sure that no t'othersiders were taken to Rottnest.

No @nutwood I have not heard if any or many have gone COVID-19 positive over on Rottnest . I hope the number is zero.
Two I know have tested negative so that was a relief.
I started thinking we should scuttle the disease ridden ships as so much of the problem has been caused by these Panama registered tax dodging vessels.
i hope Australia can sue them for damages but they will probably be artful dodgers.

But if these people now travel back to their interstate homes, they'll be subject to local quarantine? In Tasmania, that's fourteen days locked up in a hotel!

As Ma Anand Sheela from the Orange people once said “ tough cough” for those facing an extra 14 days isolation in another State.
@OZDUCK I checked with a PERTH newsroom and they said from all over for Rottnest isolation.

Bit rough, comparing Ma Anand Sheela to Australian citizens, simply trying to get home?

Ovation of the Seas is registered in the Bahamas, not sure about the others.

The NSW police commissioner said released quarantineers (is that a word?) would be provided documentation regarding their quarantine in Sydney in the hope that they may not have to redo quarantine in their home state but it seems there are no reciprocal arrangements in place. I expect some states will take a very parochial view and insist on another does of quarantine.
