Hi All,

I need some advice from the brains trust on this forum.

I, like many on here, have hundreds of thousands of points sitting with velocity. With the current COVID-19 situation and virgins financial position I’m concerned that if the airline was declare bankruptcy points may disappear..

What’s the likelihood of this happening and should I withdraw my points by purchasing gift cards to get some cash value at what I have..?

am I making a mountain out of a mole hill.. or is there a real threat to my velocity points been wiped out..?

No.
They are all still there.

Ok. My situation was different. Got a timeout error when transferring- points deducted from VFF but never appeared in KF. Had to chase them to reinstate. Once they were credited I managed to transfer them successfully.

I'm looking at transferring from VA to KF and noticed a few people mention that their Krisflyer accounts where due to expire which has got me a little confused...i understand KF points expire after 36 months, but does the account expire for some reason? I'm assuming perhaps due to non-activity? If so would that be postponed given the VF points transfer?

Thanks,

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Velocity pays SQ for the points.

Of course - which is why many wiser heads ere have urged SPEED in action for those transferring.

If VA pulls the plug on this transfer option, as they legally can at ANY time, simply as a gazillion payment units in real money, are heading out the door a week, the game is over.

I am surprised it has stayed open this long to be honest.

All that is left then are Gift Cards, offered at appalling rates, drawn on companies who also may not re-open their doors. Whoppee.

An inactive KF account will be expired if it has no points/activity for a period of time. This may be around a year.

I just tried to transfer my Velocity points to KF.
Nothing would make me happier than for VA to survive and flourish, however I've been burnt before.
When I tried to transfer my points this happened.
I'm not sure if it's just another glitch on the usually very glitchy site or deliberate.
Perhaps someone will know.

As others here have reported seeing this Velocity error message when you go to transfer to SQ, the game may be over already?

I guessed here that last Monday would be when they closed the gate.

An inactive KF account will be expired if it has no points/activity for a period of time. This may be around a year.

A KrisFlyer membership account which has not recorded any activity for a consecutive period of 39 months from the date of the last recorded activity will be closed without prior notice. A KrisFlyer account that has been inactive for a consecutive period of 18 months from the date of commencement of membership will also be closed.

Quick question before I move the balance of my VF points into KF, hoping someone can provide me with a good suggestion.

I have a scenario here where I am sitting on ~350k VF points and Mrs MMM has ~150k Citi points.
Our Velocity account is pooled.

Does it make more sense to:

1) Transfer all my VF to my KF and she transfers her Citi points to her KF? (This essentially splits up our points)
2) Unpool our accounts and I transfer all my VF to her VF and then she transfers everything to her KF? (Is this possible?)

Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question :)

Having TWO balances in KF is crazy. (Unless KF allow transfer KF-KF at no penalty - no idea)

Say one account is 290K and one is 210K - and you need two 250K flight awards?

Quick q: what counts as Krisflyer activity? Could the account be kept open through purchasing points, for example, or does it only refer to flying / earning points?

I just now transferred 250k Velocity Points to KF with no delays on the transfer.

I really hope Virgin makes it through to the other side.

I also did a couple of days ago but I also really want to see them flying again.

Yay!

But in so many ways I feel not at all happy about doing it.

I just hope there's light at the end of the tunnel and VA is back in the air as usual soon.Screen Shot 2020-04-02 at 3.56.35 pm.png

Some may find it helpful to review this. I welcome critique for omissions or inaccuracies.

These are my understanding of the facts currently available, and my decision as a result;

- it's certain the current restrictions and climate make large pax driven commercial aviation impossible in Oz
- we don't know when the government will lift restrictions, or what will happen with aviation when they do
- there will (almost) certainly be commercial aviation in Australia in the future
- there is great uncertainty if Virgin Australia will an operator
- The government have so far refused to bail out Virgin, refusing their first request (edit: by bailout I mean any government financial intervention, which can take many different forms)
- They have said they are "committed to there being two operators in aviation" after all this is done, although it may not mean Virgin gets bailed out
- The government is more likely to take action consistent with a conservative government approach. Rather than directly intervene by bailing out a largely foreign owned Virgin Australia and provide direct assistance unfairly to a single private entity, they are more likely to "reduce the barriers to entry" for a new player in aviation. This would allow a new operator easier entry into an otherwise hugely regulated and difficult to enter market, at the same time they could cherry pick a defunct VA's assets and workforce
- The public statements made to date could be the govt using negotiation tactics to make VA's bail out request terms even more favorable (the govt is essentially directly threatening to let VA collapse and let a new operator pick up the pieces, as reported in the AFR and elsewhere)
- Ansett was allowed to collapse in 2001 despite a long history, huge workforce and perceived cultural significance. QF had a field day in the years after until VA re positioned itself to compete.
- Ansett's collapse was considered unlikely by 'experts' right up until the moment it happened. (Other parallels could be drawn about 'years of poor management leading up to the major external event and collapse' but they are not as relevant as they appear. Apples and oranges in different times and worlds.)
- VA could last until the restrictions are lifted and then resume operating (close to) normally and 'weather the storm'.
- VA would be reluctant to devalue points and sting the high yield frequent flyers, but may be forced to do so by a number of other internal or external factors and operating conditions
- Singapore Airlines could be allowed to step in, increase ownership and bail out VA, although this would require govt changing rules on foreign ownership
- All of these possible outcomes, and many others aside, could be totally consistent with these currently known facts
- it's impossible to know which facts will end up being relevant and which ones will not
- it's likely the most significant information which could be known right now is not listed above
- it's likely that the most significant information which could be known is not known by anyone (so no point looking to share price or another article for a clue into what the 'real experts' are thinking - not that there are any 'real experts')

* The last four points are born out of the paradigm explained and defended by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in The Black Swan, Fooled By Randomness and his other popular and technical works.

Other points collected from ABC news, AFR and other media.

Although there's no certainties with SQ, I decided to convert all points across to KrisFlyer miles where I can still realise about $2,000 value per 100k points for long haul business class travel, compared with $500 per 100k for vouchers. The valuation is subjective, so that's as much personal consideration as everything else.

Yep. Decision made. No travel forecast in the next 3 years but just transferred 2M over to SQ.

I feel some F flights might be in my future to use these things up.

Hopefully VA survive. Just a bit too much risk to carry with a reasonably hefty balance.

Yep exactly why I would prefer to keep all points under the one account.
If that's the case, does option 2 work for me?

I unpool our Velocity accounts and transfer all my VF points to Mrs MMM.
Has anybody done this before?

Im sitting on about 1m Velocity points, I am really thinking of doing the transfer to SQ, but I mainly fly Melb - LA which means I will need to fly Via singapore every trip

Such a hard choice, Id be fairly annoyed if VA fold and I was to loose all of my points.

NZ? UA?

New Krisflyer account is now linked to Velocity account. Do I pull the trigger or not.

Velocity members are unaccustomed to the benefits of REAL alliances

SQ is a senior member of one such alliance.

There are about 8 Star carriers you can fly OZ-North America with. All using SQ points.
