I have to ask why does pilot training continue? Is that part of the flight school (and therefore generating income)?

They seem to have been struggling for so long, that this is hardly unexpected.

I am not sure an airline that has generated profits every year since it was formed could be characterised as "struggling". But their position of closing down all services is not out of kilter with a range of airlines around the world.

I would almost be willing to bet my house that within 2 weeks, VA will have ceased flying, and QF will be flying 3-4 services a day between MEL and SYD, SYD and BNE and 1-2 a week between MEL and ADL/HBA, MEL/SYD-PER, BNE-CNS/DRW and a few intrastate services. Unless government support is forthcoming.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has just tweeted that Queensland is also closing its borders. It will be interesting to see how they manage this between Tweed and the Southern Gold Coast.

I have friends that live in the Tweed that need to visit doctors on Gold Coast regularly and there are many others who commute of course.

Same problem as Broken Hill and several towns straddling the SA/VIC and NSW/VIC border. There will be iterations upon iterations and clarifications over coming days.

It's never going to be a perfect solution but it will be the best we can do. And it will discourage people from just taking a holiday from place to place and other random journeys that don't need to be done.

There was talk of future declaration of red zones over the weekend, IIRC to be discussed at Tuesday’s National Cabinet meeting.

NSW-Vic and NSW-ACT are the only state/territory borders not now closed.

cheers skip

Not sure why and nothing constructive to contribute, but I have in the back of my mind somewhere that the ACT/NSW can't be closed by the ACT due to some legislative restriction or not practical to be implemented due to demographics.

This crisis, and the bushfires make you really wonder about the artificial lines that states create. In a rational world, you would consider region by region management of crises.

Looking at map for some weekend travel ideas

Well unless you want to be limited to hub and spoke travel you will need knock a few wholes in the walls if you want to indulge in the every popular Round The Apartment routes. But then the second problem will be deciding whether to go clockwise or anti-clockwise.

You can probably look to get away with a quick transit through the bathrooms and book in layovers in the other rooms.

I don't think there is any reason they can't, it just isn't practical given places like Queanbeyan, Marrumbateman and Bungendore and the amount of travel from people who live just outside Canberra but work and shop in Canberra.

Queensland has probably the biggest such impracticality with 60,000 Gold Coasters south of the border, but it seems the border is rubber, the 60,000 are honorary Queenslanders, and the ‘border’ will be closer to Sydney . This report below from ABC on how it will work... the Tweed Heads tick gate is still there but stopped being a general barrier in the early 1970s. Maybe they will fire it up again!

Authorities will convene in the coming days to establish how road-based restrictions can later be placed along the state's borders.

But Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young said it would be "business as usual" for those commuting between northern New South Wales and Queensland on a daily basis, even after the border closures were in place.

"We have a very close relationship with northern New South Wales — a lot of people live there and work in Queensland and vice versa," Dr Young said.

"People in northern New South Wales come to Brisbane and the Gold Coast for everything … healthcare, shopping, everything."

Dr Young said the border closures were in place to stop travellers from other capital cities with high community transition rates visiting remote areas of Queensland.

"We do not want people who are currently in Sydney or in Melbourne who have been exposed to go up to the Whitsundays for instance — we've got no cases up there," she said.

It isn't legislation but the latter is correct. You can draw lines on maps but as a practical example it's 'Canberra the region' not 'Canberra the city'.

It's not uncommon for people to live in NSW (Queanbeyan) and work in Canberra or vice versa.

It would be very difficult to untangle this on a border basis and that's just one example.

Someone else has already pointed out similar issues with QLD/NSW between Tweed/Coolangatta and so on.
