Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

There is physical proof that infected people have been in Bali, so it is almost impossible that they do not have any cases.

What is of course extremely possible is that their poor health system is not picking it up / they are covering it up.

It is only a matter of time before they can't cover it up any more and cue a lot of Australians then cancelling all of there travel there which is obviously what they are trying to avoid...
Indeed. Australia is their largest tourist card and then there is China. Closely followed by Japan. It's impossible that there are no cases there. Im thinking of a cover up like China in the initial stages.

Is it a cover up or they just genuinely don’t have the ability to test people properly?
My understanding is they weren’t even able to start testing until a couple of weeks into Feb so were already behind the 8 ball. Indonesia, Thailand, Laos are all big concerns IMO

Any issue with Bali should appear pretty quickly, either over there or here.

How you dare not believe that there are no cases there. The authorities have already stated publicly there are no cases because they have been praying and their prayers have been answered by COVID being kept away from their nation.

EDIT: In case anyone bypassed the emoji - my comment was sarcasm and not criticising the post)

Bali will hit like a time b--b when it does arrive. Easter coming up with school holidays = massive tourist time. I have no idea if tests do start going positive, what on earth they will do. With two (at least) positive cases transiting through that means two planes of potentially infected passengers.

Gee the NZ PM speaks confidently and seemingly with a good handle on what actions have been taken there. Also interesting to read the story of one of those infected on the Diamond Princess that was repatriated to the US

What chance do we have....
"Anyone who was a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Sydney last week is being urged see a doctor or an emergency department as soon as possible.

It’s fear passengers on flight QR908, who were sitting near a woman later confirmed as the sixth case of coronavirus in NSW, may be at risk.
NSW Health said the woman in her 50s flew from Iran to Sydney via Qatar on February 23.
Her symptoms began within 24 hours of landing, but the woman did not visit hospital until six days later."

Totally irresponsible reporting and a waste of our health system resources.

At most the people in the 2 rows in front or behind should (maybe already) have been contacted by authorities from the airline manifest.

I guess anyone who used a common area (bathroom) could easily have picked it up as well.

They do go later on and say "if you have symptoms". At the end of the day unless you are unwell enough to need hospital treatment, even with a positive test you will just be sent home for a 14 day self quarantine. Then eventually we wont even bother testing for it unless patients are very unwell. Thats what happened with swine flu.

Ignoring the human misery, this virus is having a positive effect on air quality and the environment in general.

Air pollution over China has improved considerable, and forecast for oil consumption had been lowered by more than 500,000 barrels a day.

So far it has not been the case that an infected passenger has been shown to have infected many other passengers on flights.

Also most infected passengers have worsened after flying and so may not have been contagious when they actually flew.

I reckon no point worrying about things beyond our control or the constant regurgitation of information on social media by others who know no more about where this is going than you do. Better to focus on the practical things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones. As Dr Strangelove said, "stop worrying and love the bomb"... 👌

Im not sure the NZ'ers share that view though

You left a key work out there ALL.

As in all things, you can please some people some of the time but can't please all the people all of the time, no matter what you do. There are few other persons that spring to mind holding reign in recent times around the world who I wouldn't put in the same class as JA.

Yes. My bad. I'll restate - I'm not sure all New Zealander agree. We will see at the next election how it all translates. I agree her speech this morning? about coronavirus was excellent.

People are infectious before they develop symptoms.
As well although everyone knows droplet spread the virus can live for some time on various surfaces.
So just imagine the woman on the QR plane from Doha to SYD.Pretty likely she had to visit the bathroom at some stage. What if she sneezed over her hands or even wiped her nose with her hand. Then when she visits the bathroom does what I have seen very many times that is balancing by holding on to the aisle seats.Virus could then be transferred to the seat.Probable that everyone in that row will hold on to the back of the aisle seat of the row in front so potentially a lot of pax exposed.

My rating is not based on her brand of politics, it is on her manner, bearing and genuineness. Indeed her actual humanity.
