An Awful Qantas Experience That Must Be Shared.

The SYD business lounge in T1 needs more than a bit of upgrade. I was there last Sunday and in less than 10 min I left for the EK lounge

EK had fewer staff but they all were attentive. The quality of food on buffet far better, imo. Downside was the AC wasn’t working that morning.

When is the EK lounge open?

It's well known it has been in need of a complete overhaul for a few years now...almost anywhere in the general international terminal area is a better experience than the J lounge!

I always imagine a young professional new to a job flying SYD-DFW for the first time in J where their company has spent $8k ++ on fares walking into this lounge and wondering if they got lost

Agreed 100%, there are some people who would have laid out some considerable coin to be in there.

I’m obviously in the minority but I think it’s far from the worst lounge going around. Obviously needs some work done though

Compared to the Asian and ME carriers, Qantas definitely isn’t offering a premium product. I do believe that not only do they know this they also know that they can get away with this given their market power within the Australian market and majority of Australian’s inability to move away from the QFF program (myself included).

I'm not quite sure I agree with this. I've always found Qantas' hard products to be quite good. It's a bit unfair to compare an old Qantas B747 with planes from Asian/ME carriers that are literally less than a few years old. Australia is also not a centralised hub like Dubai/Singapore/HK, so it's tough for Qantas to generate the revenue the Asian/ME carriers can through pure numbers. That said, the hard product on the Qantas B787 and refurbed A380 is about as good as the Asian/ME carriers.

I've never had any issues with the crew onboard Qantas, they've always been pleasant enough to me. I generally prefer the more laid-back attitude of the Qantas crew. There are also other benefits to Qantas as well - e.g. more favourable flight times (generally)...etc.

Either way, I don't think Qantas really have as much market power as you suggest. There are plenty of other options to most major destinations, some of which even credit to QFF. E.g. you could take a QF branded EK flight to Europe and earn at the same rate as a flight with QF metal if you really preferred EK product.
