I’m thinking of booking a premium economy ticket to JFK with the intention of waitlisting for a J points upgrade on the Au to LAX leg. However, because I fly from Hobart I will have a domestic connection that doesn’t have premium economy seats. Does anyone know what fare code these domestic legs book into? When I’ve searched for flights, the VA website just states “economy” for that leg, but doesn’t say what kind of economy ticket.

It’d be great if it was freedom because then I could finally use my WP complimentary upgrades.

Expedia and ITA Matrix both display the fare codes for each leg of a journey.

Looks like both 'Preimium' and 'Premium Saver' tickets book into the 'Y' fare class for domestic connections which translates to a Freedom ticket so you are in luck!
