Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Appointment

Air New Zealand's Board of Directors has appointed Greg Foran as the airline's next Chief Executive Officer.

From what I've read and hear about Greg Foran, he has a good reputation as a leader. Coming from a massive company in Walmart.

Before that was Head of BigW in Australia.
Also father of rugby league player Kieran Foran.

Definitely from a very different industry however

Quite a few Woolworth execs go on to executive positions in Walmart.

No it’s not....

Big W has been a terrible performer for the Woolworths group and is in the process of being shut down due to chronic under performance from inception. That’s what I meant by it not being a gold star.

Big W was doing well under Greg’s leadership. He then moved into the position of Director of food, liquor and Petrol.

Woolies picked a dud in Grant O’Brien and let Greg slip through their fingers .... we all know how that turned out.

Think it was always going to be a tough run for Woolies after a few good years. Up against a resurgent Coles, a rapidly growing Aldiand even Costco.

My main worry would be Woolworths/Walmart focus on strong cost control - from employees, to suppliers, as well as tight watch on revenue, $/sqm of shelf space .

Probably an appropriate LCC attitude, how it transfers to a more mixed carrier will be interesting

It'll be sad if with him comes a change to their culture. Air NZ staff always look like they are enjoying their jobs.
