Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Wednesday 14 August's QF73 (1740 hours SYD - SFO B744) pushed back 57 late so same day arrival is estimated at 1512 hours, 72 late.

QF2 is showing as delayed in SIN by half an hour to 2200 hours for the run down to SYD but that time has passed.

QF79 (Thursday 15 August 2019, the 0910 hours MEL - NRT) departed 39 late with arrival estimated tonight as 1932, 32 down.

Earlier, the ex-LHR/SIN QF2 arrived SYD at 0731, 141 minutes late.

The 0940 hours MEL - HKG was far worse, departing at 1236 (176 late) with suggested arrival 2005 hours this evening, 165 late.

'The 15' ex BNE (for LAX) unusually pushed back at 1214, 114 late with estimated same day blocks on at 0800 hours, two hours late, delaying its next leg for this B789, the 0820 hours to JFK, by 65 minutes in pushing back. However QF claims arrival in New York will only be 15 late at 1655 hours on Thursday.

Normally QF51 (1200 'high noon' BNE - SIN) is either early or on time. However today it is projected to depart four hours late with resultant Lion City arrival at 2140, 205 late. This will delay QF52. This is likely to delay QF52 but so far there's no public advice (as distinct from messages to those booked) from QF about that.

The A388 on QF7, the 1235 hours SYD - DFW is not departing until 2130 tonight, 535 minutes late with arrival in Texas suggested as 2200 hours, 540 late. This will delay Thursday night's QF8 back to SYD.

Yesterday at lunchtime UK time, the Wednesday 14 August QF10 (1210 hours LHR - SIN - PER) departed at 1234 but did not arrive PER on Thursday 15 until 1249 hours, 54 late. Blocks off occurred at 1437 (72 late, an unusually lengthy intermediate stop for this often punctual or early domestic leg, with MEL arrival suggested as 1950 tonight, 55 late. 'The 49; from MEL to SFO as a result is to be marginally delayed by 15 minutes to a revised 2110 hours departure.

QF80 on Thursday night is forecast to depart NRT 25 late with Friday 16 arrival being half an hour behind at 0820 hours.

The 1310 hours CNS - MEL, QF703, pushed back 67 late with B738 VH-VXO. Arrival should be 1746 hours, 71 late.

QF445 (1530 hours mid afternoon SYD - MEL) took off at 1558, about 15 late. Arrival looks to be 1736 hoirs, 31 late for B738 VH-VZA.

QF10 goes LHR-PER-MEL does it not?

The much delayed QF7 on Thursday 15 August has just departed SYD, at 2147 hours - 552 minutes late.

Further south, the 2055 hours MEL - SFO (QF49) was later than predicted in pushing back, doing so 35 late at 2130 hours.

The SIN down to SYD QF2 is predicted to push back half an hour behind at 2000 hours.

While we don't usually record flights that run early, the PER - LHR QF9 tonight departed bang on time at 1845 hours and is showing on Friday 16 August as arriving LHR (gate) at a predicted 0356 hours, 69 minutes early (too small hours-ish for my liking on any flight.) While I won't have monitored every QF9 since the change in operations from via DXB, this is by far the earliest I can recall it being said to arrive in London.

QF10 (B789 VH-ZND) on Thursday 15 departed LHR uneventfully at 1212 hours, just two minutes with Friday 16 PER arrival suggested as 1148, seven minutes ahead of schedule. However the usual domestic leg, at this time of year the 1325 hours PER - MEL QF10 has been altered to depart at 1755 with arrival in MEL at 2325 hours very late at night, 270 minutes late.

QF10 ex PER tomorrow (altered schedule) and QF9 ex MEL are showing as being operated by a B738 so the B789 on QF10 that's not long left LHR is probably returning ex PER tomorrow night at 1845 hours ex the West Australian capital. The B738 must be turning around ex QF9 to run QF10 back to MEL, hence the compulsory far longer wait in PER if one is MEL-bound.

In such circumstances will QF place its premium passengers on an earlier domestic across the Bight if there are spare seats?

Tonight all the B789s are in use on QFi flights but that does not give a window to tomorrow. Maybe B789 VH-ZNG that is on QF50 (SFO - MEL, due in early on Friday morning) requires maintenance or is on some other duty tomorrow.

This will not be the first time QF9/QF10 MEL - PER - MEL have been B738s but it is rare, and from memory on a small number of other occasions, an A332 has operated these not a B789 or B738.

Also on Thursday 15 August, QF487 from SYD to MEL (the 2000 hours, B738 VH-VXO) was in the sky at 2121 so expected arrival is 75 late at 2250.

Vh-VXD on QF698, the ADL across to MEL should be at its gate at 2258, 43 minutes behind the schedule.

QF407, the Friday 16 August 0715 hours SYD down to MEL (B738 VH-VXN) was in the sky at 0800 so arrival should be at about 0920 hours, half an hour tardy.

The 0810 hours SYD short hip to CBR, QF1513 (B717 VH-YIF) took off at 0858 with suggested arrival 0940, 35 late.

In more on 16 August 2019, QF81 (1010 hours morning SYD - SIN) departed at 1032 hours with a 31 minute arrival at 1721 the prediction. This should not delay any southbounds tonight.

The 0930 hours SYD up to PVG is worse, with QF129 pushing back 44 late for projected arrival at gate at 1910, 45 down.

The B744-operated, in their declining days, QF63 continues to be tardy with SYD pushback at 1136 translating to forecast arrival at 1740 late this afternoon local time in JNB, 40 minutes behind the timetable. This will slightly delay QF64, the 1910 hours redeye.

QF19 (1210 hours to MNL ex SYD) has been cancelled. QF's website shows QF20 as operating but this is unlikely as there isn't a spare A332/3 in MNL as far as I know.

The long haul B744 on QF27 (1235 hours lunchtime SYD - SCL) departed 52 late with arrival is estimated as 40 late at 1145 hours, same day.

The very late Thursday 15 August SYD - DFW (see above) arrived at 2203, 543 minutes late. Pushback for QF8 has been further delayed to a predicted 0010 on Friday (105 late) meaning Saturday 17 August SYD arrival at 0735 hours, 70 down. Due to the long allowed turnaround times in Sydney for the QFi A388s, normally a delay of this magnitude will not see a late departure of any of the daily A388 outbounds.

Thursday's 11 across the USA was tardy due to QF15 being late (again, see above) but pushback was not until 1014 hours, 114 late with JFK arrival (ex LAX) at 1820, 100 late. The B789 then turned around to operate QF12, departing 100 minutes behind schedule at 1950 from JFK with LAX at gate arrival suggested as 2345, 165 minutes late. This loss of time on the westbound is because B789 VH-ZNB was not airborne in JFK until 2121 hours, 91 minutes after pushing back. I've not checked why but former aviator jb747 has remarked more than once than in summer, thunderstorms can be severe so couple that to streams of inbound flights and we may have the reason for the slow taxi.

The LAX - SYD QF12 is by the looks of its amended 0040 Friday 16 (130 late) pushback being held for connectees, so Saturday 17 arrival for this should be 0835, 125 late.

In such circumstances 'the 94' is usually allowed to depart without connecting passengers but Thusrday night's 2240 hours is delayed until 0030 on Friday (110 late) with Saturday arrival expected at 0915 hours, 105 late.

QF16 (LAX - BNE) is suggested as departing 100 minutes late at 0100 hours on Friday for Saturday 17 at gate arrival at about 0730 hours, 85 minutes behind the timetable, and normally in sufficient time to form a punctual QF15 morning departure back to LAX.

UPDATE: QF12 is expected to arrive SYD on Saturday 17 August at 0820, QF94 MEL at 0935 and QF16 BNE at 0755 hours.

In more on Friday 16 August, QF439 (1400 hours afternoon SYD - MEL) was airborne at 1458 hours. B738 VH-VXQ should arrive at 1615, 40 late. Still, better than yesterday when this flight was cancelled.

...The very late Thursday 15 August SYD - DFW (see above) arrived at 2203, 543 minutes late. Pushback for QF8 has been further delayed to a predicted 0010 on Friday (105 late) meaning Saturday 17 August SYD arrival at 0735 hours, 70 down...

QF8 has been further altered to depart distant DFW at 0050 hours on Friday 16.

One assumes because QF7 was very badly delayed, the flight crew would have signed on later than normal but with a flight time of 15:55 to 16:30 in the past week plus pre and post flight duties, and taxiing at each end, there may not be a huge amount of leeway before further delays require cancellation to be considered. Is a diversion to BNE (275 fewer miles) and new crew taking over there after being flown up from SYD helpful, or never on the cards?

In the past week, QF8 has only been on time twice, and has had some bad delays.

UPDATEL QF8 pushed back at 0100 hours on Friday 16, 155 minutes late. It promptly took off at 0117 hours.

In more today, QF818 MEL-CBR (B738 VH-VYI) has a revised arrival at 17 27, 57 min behind.
QF653 MEL-PER has a tentative departure at 22 15, 100 min late.

QF441 SYD-MEL 14 30 service, QF449 SYD-MEL 16 30, QF499 SYD-MEL 16 45, QF457 SYD-MEL 17 45, QF459 18 00, QF493 19 15 have been cancelled.
QF470 MEL-SYD 15 45 hours, QF452 MEL-SYD 17 00, QF462 MEL-SYD 19 00 services have been cancelled.

Apologies as it's not a delay, but FYI - QF654 PER-BNE, which is normally a B738 service, currently being operated by a B789.

QF20 MNL-SYD has been cancelled as per Melburnian's advice on cancellation of QF19.

This was discussed maybe 20 or 30 posts ago, with Flyerqf informing us that it's for crew training. I gather it should occur weekly, but sometimes may not.

As advised yesterday (see above), the Friday 16 August 2019 QF9 and QF10 domestic sectors were to be operated by a B738, which turned out to be VH-XZD, departing MEL as QF9 four minutes late at 1519 hours, taking off after a fair while at 1547 and arriving PER 39 late at 1754 hours. The second QF9 sector is still showing as pushing back at 1845: possible, but unlikely, especially given the need to transfer luggage of MEL - LHR patrons.

UPDATE: The PER to LHR QF9 departed at 1912, 27 late but should arrive on Saturday 17 at 0445, 20 early. Aircraft is B789 VH-ZNE that as noted by Silvia above had arrived in PER (ex BNE) at 1159 hours today on QF589.

Colleague VH-ZND came in to PER today on QF10 and then departed as QF654 to BNE, arriving five minutes early at 2025 hours. I had thought the QF10 arrival in PER would form QF9 but not so.

The B738-operated PER - MEL sector of QF10 pushed back at 1900 hours with predicted Saturday 17 MEL arrival at 0033, 338 minutes later than the normal arrival.

Saturday 17 August 2019 finds QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK) not pushing back until 1110, so arrival is predicted at 1745 late this afternoon local time, 65 late. This will delay the departure of redeye QF24.

A388 VH-OQA came in from DFW at 0842 hours on QF8, 137 late and then formed 'the 11' departing 83 late from SYD at 1058 hours so same day LAX arrival is a suggested 0728, 68 behind. This may well slightly delay pushback of the transcontinental USA QF11 B789.

In any case, QF15 ex BNE is delayed, departing on 17 August at 1030, just 10 late but expected to arrive in LAX at 0709, 69 late. VH-ZNB is the craft.

Not sure how these updates are informed, usually.

Returning home (CBR) tomorrow from Virginia via DFW.

QF8 DFW-SYD for 17th Aug (OQC) has been delayed to the early hours of the 18th, departing Terminal D at 0125 and arriving at Sydney on Monday 0925, for a ~3 hour delay. Hopefully a more leisurely connection in SYD.

Qantas don't seem to be having a great run recently with these USA-AUS legs. 17hrs in the air, just hope the Business class upgrade bid gets approved...

Regards,
JS
