By invitation only for flyers aged 18-35 years, simply register and book an Economy seat on any international Qantas-operated flight with a QF flight number by 31 August 2019*. Your departing flight can take off any time between 1 June 2019 and 29 February 2020, as long as you book at least 7 days prior to travel and include your QFF number in your booking.

Interesting promo which could be useful to some here. As an <35yo WP I didn't get the promotion email but I was still able to register using the link - will see whether I get a pass on my next booking!

Expect to see the SYD and MEL International J lounges packed to the rafters for the next 9 months given this promo and the almost bimonthly DSC promos. Very poor timing given both lounges are due for imminent renovation...

Haven't seen a promotion like this with an age limit before, any reason why they would restrict it to the "youth" segment?

Wonder if this could backfire with some of the older demographic who can't register looking at other airlines out of spite.

To market to that particular group only. Maybe it's an area lacking in growth..

Maybe coz the "youth" segment dont have loans and are renting/living with parents so they got cash to spend on trips

If anyone was ever in doubt that Qantas International Business lounges were anything but 'economy class' lounges, this should set the record straight. An extra 20, 30 or 40 people per flight in the lounges??

I wondered if, perhaps, this was a marketing tool for QF club memberships. But given their price, I'm doubtful of the potential conversion rate.

Free lounge passes, Airbnb bookings, points only flights, not sure what type of business Qantas are trying to turn themselves into

Yes, there’s a very specific reason for this.

Through their Analytics they know it generates loyalty
Slide 15
Perhaps also slide 18 considering the retention risk

And What better way to replace the old with the new....

Loyalty of course is a two way street so they need to takes steps to bring them into the tent. We’ve just seen an example in the recent election of just how tough it is to get people to swap for whom they vote.

But can be done... Zali Airways is now open for business

It really is hard to work out what QF is after here.

The extra revenue from a passenger choosing QF over say one of the Chinese carriers for their flight to Thailand? Possibly. And the extra cost of the QF ticket will offset the few bucks they outlay on catering per passenger in the QFi bus class lounges.

Do they want potential long term customers? 18 year olds might not be the market (possibly price driven). Alternatively, if 18 year old has even been in a Singapore Airlines lounge either independently or with the family on holiday, they'll pretty soon see the QF lounges don't stack up.

And on the flip side... you have a revenue business class passenger who gets dumped in the QFi J lounges having paid $8000 for their fare, 15 x what an economy class passenger might be paying, and QF loses that $8000 customer because of overcrowded and under-catered lounges. (Although I admit the $8000 passenger without platinum status to get into the QFi F lounge is probably not all that common.)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes im struggling too. I did see another member post a presentation linking such schemes to brand loyalty, not a smart move on qantas' behalf I'd rather see a focus on improving existing customer's experiences

As an 18-35 year old with QF (and various other) status, this promotion is not relevant to me. But I can understand why Qantas is doing it.

I think Qantas is trying to give "millennials" (I really hate that word) a taste of their lounges in the hope they'll purchase a Qantas Club membership and/or go for gold status. I don't think this promo is so much about trying to attract this market away from competing airlines for their holiday to Bali or Thailand (although that wouldn't be bad for Qantas if it does happen). And I don't think it's aimed at 18-35 year olds that already have lounge access with other airlines.

I have many friends in their early 20's that have never been inside an airport lounge. I think this promotion would appeal to them greatly and may help to generate longer-term loyalty to Qantas if they enjoy their lounge experience. (And honestly, most young people who have never been in an airport lounge would think it's amazing - even if frequent flyers might think otherwise.)

Agreed.
Cheap promotion to try and create lifetime loyalty.

If a millenial pays $x00 for a QF flight over Scoot/AirAsia and even Jetstar then QF Group wins

That's the thing I 'm not convinced about. An 18 year old isn't going to buy a qantas club membership for $800. They could have two more holidays to Bali for that.

Perhaps if you've never been in a lounge before you might think the Qantas ones are ok, but if you've been you'll realise the QF ones are not up to international business class standards. (I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb here to think that if you're between 18 and 35 and can afford to drop $800 for a QF membership you've probably been in a lounge before.)

Of course the final scenario is even worse. It is possible that QF truley believe their international business class lounges are top notch and amongst the best.

(Sorry... who thinks inviting 50 schoolies into the lounge before their trip to Bali is a good idea??)

CommBank doesn't run its Dollarmites Club because it wants to make a short-term profit out of primary school children. It does it so that these children will grow up to be loyal to the CommBank brand (or simply not bother looking at alternative banks as they already have a CommBank account) once they're adults with proper incomes. I'm quite convinced that this is one of the main reasons CommBank remains so profitable despite having some of the most uncompetitive financial products in the market.

This isn't exactly the same thing, but I would draw some similarities.

In any case, even though an 18-year-old who has never been to an airport lounge may not immediately buy an $800 Qantas Club membership; a 30-year-old with a stable income may well do it. Remember that the promo is targeted at people aged up to 35.

True. But even a 30 year old with a stable income would need to be flying enough to warrant $800 for lounge access. And if you’re doing that, perhaps you’ve already been in a lounge at least once? (so what’s the point in invite them into the Qf club?)

This doesn’t seem like it’s been thought through.

Thanks for sharing! Not sure if I'll be able to take advantage of this but registered just in case..

What would be the reaction if this offer was specific to other segments of travellers? Say, for instance, free lounge access for men?
Somehow I don't think that would go down too well. But an offer targeted exclusively at women would probably be celebrated.

Similarly if they made this offer for 36 to 60 year olds only, there would probably be uproar for discriminating against young people and retirees.

I'm not attempting to start a flame war. it's interesting to me how age discrimination seems legitimate.....
