QF no more paper based BP!

It would have been helpful to post a link to the article....

I can’t see it being 100%. They can stop issuing plastic FF cards and therefore stop all receipts at the gate. Encourage everyone to print BP at home by charging a fee for them at the airport.

But some people are going to rock up to check in without a phone.

Also, what about those connecting to partners that won’t accept mobile boarding passes?

I feel that there’s going to be a number of caveats on this.
You cannot enter airside at SIN without an airline printed BP. Print at home is not accepted. Maybe QF should have checked with "their largest international hub" before getting rid of BPs!

Sad Emoji :(

Cardboard boarding passes may clutter to my life - but they spark joy!
^ This!

How do you go recycling the electronic device you'll be using now? I suggest it will leave a nastier environmental legacy than 1,000 paper BPs.

Not to mention the environmental footprint of aircraft engines running longer on the ground because of delayed boardings ...
Except the engines aren't started until after push back.

You wouldn't want to be the guy ahead of us at LHR last month who dropped his phone between Aero bridge and plane!

My best use of a paper BP was some years ago. I realised that I could apply for an AusTrade grant for the business development done in Morocco the year before. This included getting the airfares re-imbursed - one of the proofs that the trip was taken was the boarding pass, which I was able to retrieve out of the pile of old BPs in the drawer reserved for them.

That was a $6,000 boarding pass, or, rather $3000 each for the outbound and inbound. :)

There would be people whilst overseas that won't or can't internationally roam on their phones, so I don't see paper BP's disappearing from International flights..at least for now.

If they were serious about saving paper they could start with their inflight magazine .... but I guess advertising $$$$ trumps virtue signalling.

Oh so SIN still do not allow home printed BP.
Thanks for that one Jessicatam.
They made a right fuss when I had a hotel printed BP in 2013.
Security guard at first id check point said "no, go desk".
He happily stamped my QF BP when he got replaced BP.

Given that QF seems to think that their app works and that everyone has the ability to use said app, it would appear that whoever at QF thinks that getting rid of paper boarding passes is a good idea isn't capable of thinking.

Tee hee, large pile, a great achievement for those who do not live with a tidy mad/tidy freak of a partner!
I got scolded when my pile got a big high, 20 I think, and I was asked, whats the point of keeping them when a lot of the ink of mine have gone!
If they are still legible, thats very good.
If you keep them like that, they do fade.
Not sure, but I think someone mentioned on here that certain photo albums without a certain chemical, maybe not plastic page dividers, or something, can extend the life of the ink printed on those BPs.
If airlines still had dot matrixs printers, then yes, those BPs would probably last longer, but with thermals, as is used now, it will fade.
The amount of time the print lasts depends on the type of ink used, how it was printed and how it is stored.

I have boarding passes from 1996 that are still fully readable, and boarding passes from 3 months ago that have no readable text.

The AN one is as fresh as when they printed it, as you can see. The cheap airlines and the heat sensitive paper are the ones that seem to go first.

Maybe an idea could be is we just reuse our old boarding passes, im sure QF would love to see this go through their machines......

And Indian airports want a copy of the reservation to just get to the checkin desks. Remember to get the pdf copy onto your working tablet before arrival. OTOH it cost me 75 INR to get the sales desk to print me a copy at BLR. Just as well the food outside was better than inside....

Happy wandering

I've also had similar requests at AMM and a few places in Europe.

Thanks for the memories!
I keep thinking, of course, in my head, what would AN be if it didn't go kaput.

A second rate airline that would continue charging 2+ x today's price .... progress will always leave the inefficient and bloated behind.

Maybe not. If AN didn't fold, then JQ might not have been founded since DJ wouldn't have grown large enough for QF to want to combat with a new discount carrier.
Thus, without JQ, Alan Joyce wouldn't have become CEO of JQ then later QF...

So after a comprehensive review we all agree this isn’t going to work. Who’s going to compile the results and send them to Qantas? ;)

Would they take any notice?...

You would have to add a "time & motion" study showing where it would cost them money; 150 pax = 20 seconds slower per pax, 1 pax dropped phone down airbridge (retrieval cost for two workers, etc), 13 pax wrong phone app, 2 pax left phone in lounge, 4 pax flat battery, 2 pax broken screen cannot read etc, etc, = time at bridge, more workers, lost gate times. Maybe we board 1 hour earlier???

I'm sure the Qantas Boiled Frog society has costed it down to the last cent.

JQ a couple weeks ago to Uluru. Lots of people with mobile bps. No issues. Re roaming and not being able to access bps, as FlygirlNZ has said, both iPhone and most if not all newer google/android phones offer a wallet feature that you save bps to. I've been using it for a long time. Used it in China last year. When I had to claim for some missing flights from Brasil a couple of years back, I just gave flight details, no paper required. Piles of dust mite harbouring bps sitting around? Just why? I'm not a millennial. I'm about to turn 56. The past was yesterday, I don't want to go back there. We don't get paper invoices for anything. Everything is online/emailed. If I need to, I have an electronic copy of it. We have solar hot water, water tank, a credit every quarter from origin for the energy generated by our pva system, low power oled tv, we're recyclers and worm farmers. Hardly a comment supporting the environmental aspect of this. It may well be about money but the environment will benefit. Don't start again about what a phone is made of. Please. Already been said. Anyone still wishing planes had radial engines and propellers? I'm finding this the funniest, and saddest, of threads :) :(
