SYD to JFK in J with CX - flight report

It is a looong flight. Last June, our Hkg-Ewr flight took 16 hours, my longest flight to date, even longer than Syd-Dfw.

Arrived JFK about 1 hr late. A long time on the tarmac getting to the terminal. Had to wait several times for other planes to go past. A very long flight. 29 hrs since I left SYD!

Will finish trip report later. Now early am here.

Thought I recognised it, in a high ‘02’ room.

Y. Residence Inn Times Square. Booked on points. Got upgrade due to gold status.

Food was OK. Service was OK throughout the flight. Call button answered within a few seconds.

Had the beef for dinner and the omelette for breakfast. A very long time between meals so I had the burger as a snack about 6 hrs before arrival. Burger took more than 30 mins to arrive.

Oh dear, insufficient sleep. Culture coffee over the road on 38th x 6th Ave is good.

Wide awake at 5am. Just 3 hrs sleep. So what better thing to do but to update!

Seat controls and features the same as SYD to HKG leg. Seat a bit wider as is the foot rest area. Storage bin beside your leg also larger. Entertainment system had identical content to earlier flight, but interface was different.

I'll be outside very soon. Waiting to speak to the manager as well as a number of parcels I had delivered to the hotel seem to have gone missing. Got 4 of the 6 last night as I checked in. They said they couldn't locate the others. I have tracking receipts for the others.

Didn't avail myself of this option, but seems like a fair price.

Overall, much like the SYD to HKG leg, I think this is a fair offering. But given the extra time involved, I'm not sure why anyone would consider this to be a good choice to get to NY from SYD. The service, price or food wouldn't get me to choose this over a quicker route. Although given CX have direct flights from HKG to many more US destinations, I could see why you might take this route if going somewhere like Boston or Washington DC. It may be that with the change required somewhere along the route, e.g. LAX, that the time is similar?

As an award flight this is definitely a solid offering. But if paying cash, I'd be choosing a shorter route.

When we traveled regularly to JFK we flew JAL BNE-NRT-JFK.The plane left BNE 1 hour later than the QF BNE-LAX service and we got to JFK 1 hour before the QF LAX-JFK service.And at half the price of QF.Of course NRT is a bit closer than HKG.
It all depends on the transit time.

It is a great walk if you start at the harlem end do a slight detour around Columbia University it is beautiful
