Has anyone experienced getting a free EconomyX seat on flight to LA with platinum status? I'm flying there over the holidays, in economy, and EconomyX seats are $219 each way. Not sure I want to pay that price so was wondering if I should ask when I get to the airport.

Where are you seeing $219, should only be $199

If you're happy to travel in a regular Y seat, than go for it and ask checkin/lounge, but don't be offended if you're refused. Im guessing you'd only be comped up to YX if Y is oversold.
To me, its a no brainer and i'd pay the $199 ( which ive done ) as im 6"2 i really appreciate the extra leg room.

Thanks for the advice! I might keep my eye on availability and make a call as the flight gets closer. I re-checked the price and it was $215 on the website, so not sure if they raised their price, but either way, not that much of a difference.

I think i paid 169 USD for economy X from LAX to SYD. It was well worth it for the extra legroom alone.

But if i can get a business reward seat then that is the preferred option. Otherwise economy X it is. Im 6'3 so regular economy unforutnately will never be an option for me on long haul.

The one time i flew PE on a $ upgrade i found it to be not worth it (over economy X) even though i snagged it with a $490 lowball bid. At the end of the day I just cant justify the extra money when the seats are almost identical to economy X. I guess for me, the slightly better food service is not worth that much in my eyes. Just my opinion though, others may find the PE offering to be good value.

You get it for free as Platinum (and sometimes Gold) but it's not a published benefit. Save your cash and ask nicely at check in.

Is that from your own experience?
Im going to try and ask for it on my SYD-HKG in the new year, but have already paid for it on my LAX-BNE as i dont want to gamble on it.

I suspect such a thing on long haul international may be something unwritten/unpublished.

May be best to keep it that way.
Does it apply to all passengers travelling with you like it does on Domestics?
Can't see too many such seats on the 332's.
