As per the thread subject, if I cancel an award online, how long will it take for points to come back in my account so I can book another one?

Cancelled for 4 on one booking this week. One pax worth of points back within a day. Followed the others up next day and received overnight. So 3 days all up

I've done this twice in the past few months. The first time it took ~5 business days, the second time is was as soon as I got off the call.

I just cancelled one about an hour ago and was amazed to see the points already back in my account!

Was this from an online cancellation, or over the phone?

I can't believe how the replies are wildly all over the place. Could it be down to complexity of the original trip and the method used?

Mine was to cancel QF 36 SIN-SYD. Tried to do it on line, twice, over a few days, but nothing happened. Called the Plat line and was told "you can't do it online - even though it says you can"

So she cancelled it and said a few days " or maybe a bit more because it's it of Singapore":eek: Yeah, the electrons travel slower there.

@juddles will be looking for a snarky comment for me wrt QF so, there it is.

It's actually due to the booking being issued in the Singapore office, and they (that 'office') have to issue the refund. It's sent to a queue to action.

I recently cancelled online: Qantas metal, SFO - Adelaide and points were back that day and money refund a couple of days later. Very surprised at efficiency.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It's be interesting if we compiled people's results and analysed the trends. I wonder if it would be beneficial if people posted their award cancellation info and then the time it took to get their points and money refund?

You'd probably need information such as:

Airline
Route
PAX
Cancelled online/phone
Days points refunded
Days money refunded

??

Yeah, I appreciate that :) although why it has to be be physically done there is beyond me. I can pay from Tasmania, using their Singspore based web site. You'd expect that someone in Sydney or even Manila could reverse the transaction, similarly using the Singapore site

What are people's experience with the taxes, fees and carrier charges part of the refund?

I have waited weeks for points and more importantly dollars to be refunded. Invariably there's some issue that needs a manual follow-up call to get it to move. In the case of dollars it's an absolute rort -- my credit card can be charged within minutes for a payment; but weeks for a rebate.to show and need for reminders.

I am currently waiting for both points and dollars to be refunded. Only happened on the weekend and was a complicated series of bookings, so I'm not yet concerned, and if all is refunded it will actually be a nice gesture from Qantas. So I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

Yes that's the part that concerns me more, the cash refund. I generally have enough points to tide me over and can make do, but having to chase the cash refund would be very annoying.
