QF 117 from 31 March 2019

Good to see some more overnight options with Qantas to Asia. I do wonder, though, what the logic of having the plane sit all day in HKG is? I would have been very happy to see a daytime return flight.

I am booked on QF117 early May. I now have an 0500 arrival into HKG. I guess it saves me a hotel room before my 0830 MH departure.

I tried to get QF to put me on QF35-CX636 but no go.

When I saw this yesterday I was hoping 117 was a F service so the spa may be open a bit later in the SYD F lounge. No such luck.

Is odd not to be a return day flight.

Other than a potential slots issue, perhaps this would open the door for Qantas to operate a fifth-freedom route into China, or elsewhere, during the day? I guess that would also require a slot, but certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that they release details in stages.

Perhaps SYD-HKG-TPE?

I guess it would be possible, but I just can't see it happening.

I can see this being popular but more with the corporate crowd.

As for fifth freedom flying, QF used to operate between HKG and BKK mid to late 1990s.

AU-HK air service agreement allows for the following 5th freedom rights:

Through flights to HKG: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand - 7 per week on each
Beyond HKG:
Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea - 8 flights per week (combined)
Germany, France, Scandinavia, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland - 1 point only, 3 per week
UK - 1 port only, 7 per week

50% of aircraft capacity or 200 pax per flight, whichever is higher.

I hope they do that from Melbourne as well.. prefer morning arrival in HKG

I am on CX138 this month, that has the same timings. Means I get to my end destination in Europe in the late afternoon, and don't have to try and stay awake all day. So QF117 will provide similar connection options on for those who are not stopping in HKG.

There are plenty of onward connections to Europe from HKG that leave late in the evening. Changing the timing of this flight means a ~6 hour wait at HKG for connections now if flying in on QF. Though I think this aligns the SYD with the BNE and MEL experience.

Bummer.... this changes my connections to Europe..... now probably can't do the original MEL-SYD-HKG-HEL bought during the DSC promo...
probably have to do MEL-HKG-HEL, be complicated to get ORC and the DSCs now:rolleyes:

AY 102 is timed at 10:25 some days. That is what I have booked for CX138 SYD-HKG, AY102 HKG-HEL and AY1337 HEL-LHR.

Sounds alright to me, assuming you have Oneworld lounge access. ;)

Thanks, that's good to know as I'd like to try the spas in SYD, HKG and HEL all at one go on my way to LHR...
