Hi all,

Travelling to the US for a family holiday next year and I'm trying to get my head around a few things, but haven't been able to find definitive answers to some of them (I am easily confused though).

So here goes:

My details:
--> Currently Gold status, on track for Plat by the time we fly mid next year
--> Wife and 2 x kids are Bronze
--> Kids will be 14 and 16 on departure

Trip details:
1. SYD > SFO via Fiji (Nadi). Classic reward (CLASS X)
2. SFO > SYD via Qantas, Classic Reward (CLASS Z)

--> Does this mean we won't be able to get any lounge access in Sydney because it isn't a QF flight?
--> Does anyone know what the deal is with the Cathay Pacific Lounge access in SFO? Seems to be a case-by-case situation?
--> If I CAN get lounge access (in either city), what's the deal with kids? From what I have read, QF flights will allow them in(?), but Associated Lounges may restrict to a single guest? In people's experience, if we rock up to the counter as a family, are they flexible in allowing immediate family in?

Thanks for the help!

Hey quickstatus,

SYD > NAN --> FJ910
NAN > SFO --> FJ870
SFO > SYD --> QF74

In this case even with OWConnect (OWC) there is no Qantas lounge access in SYD for the SYD-NAN flight.

To get lounge access via OWC, you need to be connecting to/from one of the FJ OWC sponsors to FJ.

So for example BA LHR-SIN then FJ SIN-NAN, a OW Lounge access is available in SIN under OWC. (At least that’s my interpretation of the OWC arrangement)

Or QF AKL-SYD to FJ SYD-NAN, a OW lounge access is allowed under OWC.

All you are really going to get is Priority Checkin and Priority Boarding at Sydney.

If you booked the FJ flights as a QF codeshare you will get OW Lounge access

You should get Lounge access for QF74 for a +1. Usually kids are allowed if they are of the one family. Lounge Dragon would have final say. And I suspect with +1 and kids, Marco Polo Lounge Dragons will say no and you will have to use the AF/KLM “canteen” lounge.

Thats very interesting to know for future reference. Thanks.
It appears the OP would get no access in SYD but access for themselves plus one at SFO in the KLM lounge and any OW lounge, is that correct?

That's not my interpretation.

What oneworld connect means for customers

oneworld connect partners will provide select alliance benefits to frequent flyers from any oneworld member airline travelling on their flights, with a more extensive range of benefits offered with their oneworld sponsors.

Customers with Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby status in any oneworld member airline’s frequent flyer programme will be able to use priority check-in desks, where available. Also, customers with Emerald or Sapphire status will be offered priority boarding.

The additional benefits offered by oneworld connect partners to customers from their oneworld sponsors and vice versa include:
  • Through check-in of passengers and their baggage for journeys including connections between a connect carrier and any of its oneworld sponsors.
  • The ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer rewards, and earn frequent flyer status points, for eligible flights. (For customers from oneworld connect airlines, these benefits depend on the oneworld connect partner offering a frequent flyer programme.
  • Access to select lounges at key airports for First or Business Class passengers or those with eligible top-tier frequent flyer status.

It would seem QF would offer lounge access etc to FJ pax as they are the oneworld connect sponsor?

Technically any OW lounge according to OW Lounge rules. The best OW lounge in SFO is CX’s Marco Polo. However in the past business, platinum and below passengers are often excluded because OW Lounge rules also gives the Lounge Dragon the right to turn passengers away due to capacity issues.

Currently QF Business class and also Platinum passengers are now “eligible” but not guaranteed for Marco Polo, and again the Lounge Dragons still have the right to turn passengers away.

I believe the “between a connect carrier and their OW sponsor” is key.

Meaning you have to connect to/from one of the OW sponsor

Let us know which interpretation is correct

After just reading that I have come to the same conclusion as yourself. That is pretty good news if so

I disagree. And the explanation above that table makes it clearer. (maybe?)

I suppose time will tell.

To me, oneworld connect is more like oneworld lite: oneworld benefits from the sponsor airlines only.

Found this in an AUSBT article

There's a better set of benefits for top-tier frequent flyers from the sponsors of a Oneworld Connect airline: through check-in of luggage, earning and redeeming points, earning status credits plus lounge access for first and business class passengers and Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald cardholders.

Yep, I also interpreted it as expansion of the current benefits, which I am assuming means access to previously inaccessible lounge(s).

Either way I'll let you all know, however I'm pretty sure we'll find out earlier given I'm not flying for another 8 months.

My current strategy is to play dumb and try and talk my way in, citing Plat status + mumbling something about new OWC arrangements
