Where are the best agents/offices to purchase OW fares (Circle Pacific/DONE/etc)??

From the OW site Indonesia seems to be the cheapest but efficiency and ease of booking also help. I've seen AA (Manila), CX (Indonesia) to name a few. Ability to purchase via phone/email also helps. In person tends to be a little more tricky.

Also does one have to originate their journey in the country of purchase? Are there ways round this? Thanks.

In general you are charged the higher price of the point of origin and the point of sale. As such if wanting to pay cheaply through buying in say MNL or CPT then you have to fly there as part of your journey.

If you do what QF009 has done though you can keep flying consecutive DONE4's from these points say:

Points award flight SYD-MNL

DONE4 mnl-nrt-lhr-jfk-lax-mel-adl-per-syd-sin-hkg-mnl

You could break your journey in SYD for a few months.

If you do what QF009 has done

Do Circle Pacific fares also have a 12 month validity? If so I can book an award flight to one of the Asian hubs and start my trip from there...

Again Indonesia is listed as the cheapest - anyone purchased OW fares from there? Contact details?

A friend of mine purchased a ticket there last week, and happened to forward me the email with the itinerary. And here are all the details listed at the bottom:

Reservations & Ticketing Dept
CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS Ltd
26/F, Jakarta Stock Exchange Bldg, Tower 1
Jl Jendral Sudirman Kav 52-53
Jakarta 12190
Tel: +62-21-5152747
Fax: +62-21-5151731

Hope this helps.

(by the way, fare was USD$6779 + 1150 in taxes, and he lives in Darwin, so Indonesia is very convenient...)

DONE4, i presume
Yep, ex Indonesian price DONE4 is USD6779

Without commenting on the hilarious routing the CX desk came back with for a seemingly straightforward DCIR22, what are the recommendations for J class NRT to LAX on AA (777) or JL (744)? Also CX from HKG to LAX is also available (744). I'm leaning toward AA if not only for the QF SCs but not sure on their business class.

(besides the fact the CX desk put me on a JL flight NRT-LAX in Y as 'all other plane full')

I believe NRT-LAX has only 3 direct OneWorld flights. Namely
JL 6064
AA 170
JL 62

CX would possibly have routed you via HKG or Taiwan to LAX on their service to get you there.

Given your fare books into D, that would be the reason of your funny routing.

Also, you would get Business SC from all OneWorld carriers, of which CX, AA and JL are part of.

I am not familar with JL business class but being the home carrier I would probably take the JL flights in D.

Remember that there is no status bonus flying CX and crediting to QF.

Personally I would rather fly hkg-lax on CX than nrt-lax on AA. I believe that NRT-JFK is the premium JL product but not sure on NRT-LAX. I have been unimpressed with JL's regional product.

You get a points status bonus when flying QF/BA/AA. Remember that most of the CX flights to LOTFAP have an AA code share. An easy way to fly CX and still get the status bonus.

HKG 13:20 - LAX 11:25 - AA 6083 (CX884) 744
HKG 16:15 - LAX 14:15 - AA 6122 (CX882) 744
HKG 23:40 - LAX 21:55 - AA 6120 (CX880) 744

Just be aware that CX may not be able/willing to sell the AA flight number on their own metal. I understand that in some (all??) cases, the AA flight numbers are not loaded into CUPID (the CX reservation system) so they cannot be booked/ticketed through CX. Should not have any problems if purchasing through any other OneWorld airline.

I am fairly sure you only get QF SC's from AA flights, as well as points from all OW carriers.

I am fairly sure you are wrong in that. SCs are earned on all OW carriers when marketed and operated by a OW carrier:

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Status Credits

You can only earn Status credits when flying on eligible Qantas, oneworld alliance airlines (American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian), Air Pacific, Jetstar or QantasLink services. Status credits can be earned on flights operated by Jetstar Airways where a Qantas flight number is entered on your ticket when booked in Y, B, H, K or W class, or on a Jetflex fare.

The only not mentioned is Mexicana who join in 2009.

Generally SC's are earned on oneworld carriers if QFF points are earned and travel is on oneworld "Metal".

Certainly this is the case for JL and CX.

More here: SC's will be earned where it is noted: "Status Credits are earned on all eligible booking classes."

The thing that is not provided by all OneWorld carriers is the status bonus.

I stand corrected. I confused this with the status bonus.

Some nice SC's to be earned from a DCIR22 then...I think J class on a CX 747 HKG-LAX would be preferable to AA J class.

In my view, there is no comparison - CX wins hands down. As long as you book the DCIR22 through AA, you'll have no prblem getting the AA flight number for the CX flight (assuming there is availability of D seats).
