Due to a disruptive passenger apparently.

Qantas non-stop flight turned back

In addition to the inconvenience to passengers, that's going to be a very expensive exercise for Qantas.

Being only 2 hours into a 17 hour flight, I imagine they would have had to dump fuel to land.

It's also the bigger picture that needs to be taken into consideration such as the days worth of network delays and passenger inconvenience, today's QF9 MEL-PER is already being operated by a A332 which means they can't turn around the incoming QF10 -ZNF to operate last nights delayed QF9 and then ferry -ZNC back to the east coast.

So -ZNC will have to operate last nights QF9D this arvo and then -ZNF will operate tonight's QF9 after turning around.

Puts a massive dent in their operation and will no doubt affect LAX and SFO flights.

It isn’t like there is a spare plane to cover. Everyone’s plans get messed up when this happens.
I doubt that passenger will be flying Qantas any time soon.

I note that QF have managed to slip a few 73H aircraft onto QF10 for the PER-MEL leg (even before the issue noted by the OP).

QF10 on 07SEP18 was a 73H according to FR24. Same is scheduled tonight.

Not much of a downgrade if travelling in Y but J and PE pax would be in for a shock...

Still wish they were doing QF9 on the A380 still. I enjoyed my experience flying F on QF9/10.

I can’t imagine the issues and disruptions this causes for everyone. My niece is supposed to be in this flight this arvo. She is travelling with a 5 year old and a 4 year old on her own in economy.

I can't see any 737's but the next few days have been loaded in as a A330's and would definitely be interesting to see the 737's start flying a leg of QF9. No doubt those in PE would be upset with a slight downgrade to their first 4 hours of the journey.

This is the exact reason why I don't take the QF9 direct to London. SQ has 4 flights a day (for example) and in the case of a technical or passenger issue I can still get to my destination with minimal disruption with a subsequent flight.

One flight a day is going to cause major issues unfortunately.

I always like it when there are multiple flights for our destinations and had cause last time to use it.

The consequences of sweating the assets will be felt in situations like these...

Yes and I’m curious to know how many of these events, be it mechanical or human, are predicted in the business model.

QF9/10 has not had a good run this week with the technical issue also earlier in the week. I'm in London and had a colleague on the hugely delayed flight ex-LHR. He was not impressed. EK had no space either.

QF10 PER-MEL is currently being operated by a 73H (VH-VXI) at this very moment. Interesting that QF could not even organise a 73H with seat back entertainment. At least VH-VZY on 07SEP18 had this...

Cheers didn't think to check QF10. I guess that's a first to see QF10 operated by a 737? Those in J and PE wouldn't be impressed and those in Y just have the WiFi entertainment.

No wonder a MEL-BNE flight that was to be operated by a B787 today I was looking to book had gone from the schedule...

Will be interesting to see how QF handles EU261 on this plus other delays.

A 737 has operated QF10 at least once before.
