NBN Discussion

I think internet connectivity will be a factor in home purchase decisions, but it will be one of many factors that come into play.

I spoke to a REA last month about some places in Wagga, one area is FTTN and another FTTP. He did not think that the differences in MTM contributed to the differences in price.
FTTP area around $100k more than FTTN area and the price differential is most easily explainable by the much newer area and newer and larger houses. If there was a difference it would be marginal.

It might make a difference in a small number of cases.

Whereas for the masses, many wouldn't have any idea what their NBN tech is not even plan speed, and will just take the default or cheapest plan on offer from their chosen provider.

Some very interesting stats in this article.
NBN Co's top user downloads 23.6TB a month

14% of NBN users consume half the data

Over the weekend, I was at a friends activating a new network within his shiny new house. He's about 500 metres from me, but on fibre to the home. I was looking forward to seeing some decent speeds....

But, it wasn't to be. At 1500 on Sunday, the speed test results were around the 3mps mark. It improved to about 12 later on. I've never seen worse results on fibre. Makes you dream of the good old dial up days.

And what RSP?
Its a ridiculously high %ge of people on FTTP who have subscribed to a 12/1 plan

Our NBN is through some 4th party clowns my partner signed up to, we're 3km from the sydney CBD and my phone is generally superior, especially during "Netflix hours". I did tests in rutal Tanzania when I worked there and got better results on 3G than the NBN... I plan to get get one of the new hybrid Telstra modems, that picks up 4G to maintain reasonable speed when NBN lags.

Actually a somewhat inaccurate and skewed article. The physical build has not completed.
It is written by a urban journalist with an urban focus and mentions nothing about the internet/digital divide between urban and rural that still exists.

The vast majority of rural and remote will not have 100 or 50. Maybe 25Mbps with restrictions in data

But yes the NBN has always been a political football conceived on a back of envelope, and with the players being entirely political, will remain so. Or until it’s sold off...

Yes, good article, although it continues to make my blood boil.

In my opinion both parties' role in changing from the original FTTP design to FTTN (predominately) and later FTTC will go down in history as one of the greatest coughkups in political history...
  • Labour because they couldn't really articulate the original vision and sell it to the Australian public, and
  • Liberals / Nats (especially Abbott) for turning it into a party-political thing when they opposed FTTP more because it was (successful in the short term) point scoring against Labour.
We have been let down dreadfully by our politicians

Actually a back of the envelope plan was sufficient. As Tony Windsor said “do it once. Do it right. Do it in fibre.” Costs of the scheme for a national infrastructure build by a national government with lowest interest rates for a century were a no sequester.Turnbull and Abbott stupid politics on the issue have serious consequences for the country going forward, especially if they have abandoned the original argument and are giving away 200+ billion in tax and rebates to the rich companies.

We’ll be condemned to coughpy internet speeds for years to come.

Regrettably agree with everything you say... and that Tony Windsor said!

Went to visit Jindabyne friend (who was kind enough to let me upload several gigabytes of data to the cloud on his FTTN when he was on 100/40 for the first month )

He has gone down to 25/5 plan with Aussie Broadband and unlimited data for $75/m
He wishes he could go to 12/1 but ABB apparently don’t sell that plan

His modem syncs at 113/42Mbps

After 1 year with ABB he says he has actually never had to speak with them at all. Apparently rock stable connection.

NBN Lotto...
